Dominant Defensive Effort Propels SLU to 68-28 Victory Over William Carey

Lady Lions (4-5) close out nonconference home schedule by allowing fewest points in a game since 1974-75

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team allowed its third-lowest single-game point total in program history on the way to a 68-28 victory over William Carey in SLU's 2021-22 nonconference home finale Saturday afternoon at the University Center.

The Lady Lions (4-5) held the visiting Lady Saders (6-3) to 14.0 percent shooting (6-for-43) from the floor. The 28 points were the fewest allowed by Southeastern since a 74-24 victory over Newcomb College in the 1974-75 season.

William Carey managed just two made field goals in the first, third and fourth quarter and did not make a field goal in the second quarter. Natalie Kelly led SLU with a pair of blocked shots, while she, Hailey Giaratano and Jace Brumfield each had two steals.

Kelley posted her first double-double of the season, tying her career-high with 13 points and 16 rebounds. Morgan Davis shared game-high honors with Kelley with 13 points.

Morgan Carrier gave Southeastern three players in double figures with 10 points. Giaratano led the Lady Lions with three assists.

Former Lady Lion Tamia Stinson and Jamaya Galloway shared team-high honors with six points each for William Carey. Jerryonne Owens led the Lady Saders with seven rebounds, though SLU finished with a 49-31 rebounding margin.

Southeastern limited William Carey to 9.5 percent (2-for-21) shooting in the opening half. The Lady Lions countered with a 53.8 percent (14-for-26) success rate from the floor to take a 33-9 halftime lead.

William Carey played SLU closer in the third quarter, but went into the final period trailing, 46-17. A 15-0 run in the fourth quarter allowed Southeastern to grow the lead to as much as 43 in the final period.

SLU will take over a week off before traveling to Nacogdoches, Texas for a 2 p.m. game on Dec. 20 at Stephen F. Austin. The contest will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard on www.LionSports.net/ListenLive.
