SLU Drops 70-38 Decision at SFA

Lady Lions (4-6) return to action on Wednesday at Lamar for 2 p.m. matinee

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin opened the game with a 22-4 run and Southeastern Louisiana University could never recover in a 70-38 nonconference loss to the Ladyjacks in nonconference women's basketball action Monday afternoon at William R. Johnson Coliseum.

The Lady Lions (4-6) never could going offensively, shooting 28.0 percent (14-for-50) from the floor and committing 23 turnovers. SFA (9-3) snapped a two-game losing streak with Monday's victory.

Morgan Davis and Hailey Giaratano shared team-high honors with eight points apiece for Southeastern. Alexius Horne added seven points for SLU and dished out a team-high three assists.

SFA finished with a 39-30 rebounding edge, though Natalie Kelly paced the Lady Lions with six rebounds. Southeastern did force the Ladyjacks into 17 turnovers, as Breonca Ducksworth recorded a game-high four steals for Southeastern.

Aiyana Johnson and Avery Brittingham shared game-high honors with 14 points apiece to lead SFA, while Johnson also finished with a game-high eight rebounds. Stephanie Visscher contributed 10 points to give the Ladyjacks a trio in double figures. BriAnna Mitchell chipped in with nine points and led all players with five assists, as she and Visscher each contributed three steals.

Neither team could get into the offensive flow in the opening quarter, though Southeastern was limited to just two made field goals to go into the second period facing a 17-4 deficit. Horne and Caitlyn Williams accounted for the lone buckets for SLU in the opening 10 minutes.

SFA would grow the lead to as many as 19 in the second quarter, but SLU showed some life in the latter part of the opening half. Back-to-back threes by Horne and Morgan Carrier pulled SLU within 26-13 with just over two minutes left in the half. SFA would build the lead back to 31-14 going into the break.

Any hope of a Southeastern comeback was ended in the second half. SFA scored the first eight points of the third quarter to grow their advantage to 39-14. SLU would get no closer than 22 the rest of the way.

Monday marked the first leg of a two-game trip to Texas for the Lady Lions. On Wednesday, SLU will travel to Lamar for a 2 p.m. contest in Beaumont, Texas. The game can be heard online at www.LionSports.net/ListenLive.
