SLU Drops Home Opener to Sam Houston

Caldwell's Double-Double Not Enough For Lions

HAMMOND, La.  – Sam Houston drilled 14 three-pointers on their way to a 70-52 win over the Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team Wednesday night at the University Center.

The Lions (2-8, 0-1 Southland) were led by senior Keon Clergeot with 16 points while sophomore Nick Caldwell added 13 points and 12 rebounds for his first career double-double. Caldwell, a sophomore, also blocked three shots.

The Bearkats (8-5, 2-0 Southland) got 21 points from Demarkus Lampley while Zach Nutall had 17. Nutall and Lampley each shot 5-for-10 from the three-point line for 10 of the 14 SHSU three-pointers.

Sam Houston came storming out the gate as they hit seven first half three-pointers while SLU shot just 7-for-28 from the field in the first 20 minutes. The Bearkats led by as much as 35-13 in the first half and took a 37-19 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Lions fought back as they cut the lead to 11 two different times. However, Lampley continued to hit big shots to keep the Lions at arm's length stretching the Bearkats' lead to 60-38 with 6:28 remaining as SHSU picked up the win.

The Lions finished 17-for-49 (34 percent) from the field while the Bearkats were 26-for-66 (39 percent). SHSU was 14-for-35 from the three-point line while SLU was 3-for-19. The Bearkats also outrebounded the Lions, 44-34.

Southeastern will look to rebound from the loss Saturday afternoon when they travel to face Nicholls (3-5, 1-1 Southland) at 5 p.m. at Stopher Gymnasium in Thibodeaux, Louisiana.  The Colonels defeated Lamar Wednesday night at home, 76-69.
