HAMMOND, La. – Preston Faulkner's eighth-inning home run proved to be the game-winner in Southeastern Louisiana's fourth intrasquad scrimmage early Friday afternoon as Team GATA rallied from a first-inning deficit for a 3-2 win at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Faulkner's first home run of the fall, a solo shot of reliever Gage Trahan (0-1), broke a 2-2 deadlock with one out in the top of the eighth.
Nick Ray staked Team Mamba to an early 2-0 lead with a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the first. GATA tied up the scrimmage with a pair of runs in the fourth on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly off the bat of
Connor Manola and a wild pitch.
Freshman Kyle Bartley (1-0) earned the win, allowing one hit in three scoreless innings of work. The right-hander from Lake Charles, Louisiana also fanned a pair of batters. Trahan (0-1) was saddled with the loss. Faulkner's homer was the only run Trahan allowed over 3.1 innings of relief, scattering three hits and a walk. He struck out two. Mamba starting pitcher
Trey Shaffer allowed one hit and one walk in three scoreless innings, striking out five batters. Hunter O'Toole worked a pair of scoreless frames in relief for GATA, keeping the game close in the middle innings.
Tyler Finke led all hitters with a 2-for-3 day at the plate. In addition to Faulkner (1-for-3) and Ray (1-for-3),
Kenneth Bell, III (1-for-3),
Jacob Burke (1-for-3),
Bryce Grizzaffi (1-for-3), Manola (1-for-3) and Nathan Tribble (1-for-3) also picked up base knocks.
