HAMMOND, La. – Three Jacksonville pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout Sunday, averting a sweep at the hands of Southeastern Louisiana with an 8-0 win at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Falling behind, 3-0, in the second, Southeastern (3-3) had a rally snuffed out in the bottom of the inning.
Jacob Burke pulled a leadoff single through the left side and Connor Monola flared a one-out single to center field. Jacksonville (2-6) starting pitcher Austin Temple (1-1) fanned the next two batters to wipe out the threat.
Following Manola's single, Dolphin pitching retired the next 18-consecutive batters before
Trey Harrington singled with one out in the eighth.
Temple earned the win, allowing two hits and one walk in six scoreless innings pitched. He fanned seven.
Justin Simanek (0-2), the first of six Lion pitchers in the game, suffered the loss. The senior right-hander from Kent, Washington allowed six runs in 3.2 innings of work.
Five players made their Southeastern debut in the game, including
Dalton Aspholm,
Bryce Grizzaffi,
Landon Rawson,
Trevor Rugg and
Matt Taylor.
Southeastern returns to action with a pair of nonconference games Tuesday and Wednesday at ULM (5-1). Game times are 6 p.m. Tuesday and 4 p.m. Wednesday at Warhawk Field.
