COLLEGE STATION, Texas – After six days off, the Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball continues their season-opening 10-game road trip Tuesday night when they take on Texas A&M University at 6 p.m. in Reed Arena.
Â
The Lions (1-5) were defeated Wednesday night by Louisiana Tech, 78-69. SLU battled their in-state rivals for 40 minutes as LTU led, 66-63, with 3:24 remaining. However, the Bulldogs went on a 10-2 run over the next 2:53 to clinch the win.
Â
Southeastern was led by
Pape Diop scoring 15 points and grabbing eight rebounds but the Lions were just 5-for-17 from the free throw line in the loss. Junior
Gus Okafor added 14 points for SLU including four three-pointers.
Â
SLU is led by senior
Keon Clergeot (6-1, 190, G) in scoring, averaging 10.0 points per game. The UMass transfer leads the Lions in steals (8), free throws made (27), offensive fouls drawn (13) and minutes played (28.6 mpg). Clergeot is also second in assists and rebounds.
Â
Texas A&M (3-1) is coming off their first loss of the season Saturday afternoon at TCU, 73-55. The Aggies found themselves in a 21-point halftime deficit and never recovered. Texas A&M shot 18-for-47 (38 percent) from the field for the game and 6-for-24 (25 percent) in the first half in Saturday's setback to the Horned Frogs.
Â
Entering Tuesday's contest, the Aggies are led by Emanuel Miller (6-7, 208) averaging 18.3 points per game. The sophomore also has two double-doubles to his credit scoring 23 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in a win over Tarleton State. The forward, then, scored 21 and ripped down 10 rebounds in a victory over UT Rio Grande Valley. Senior Quentin Jackson (13.8 ppg) is another scoring option for the Aggies while preseason second team All-SEC selection Savion Flagg (6-7, F 223) is scoring 10.3 points and grabbing 7.8 rebounds per game.
Â
The Lions and Aggies have met four previous times with Texas A&M winning all four. The two teams met in College Station back on Nov. 16, 2015 with the Aggies coming away with the win.
Â
Historically, Southeastern hasn't had much success against the
SEC as the Lions have just two all-time wins against the conference . However, SLU battled SEC foes Vanderbilt and Ole Miss wire-to-wire last year with the Lions falling, 79-70, at Vanderbilt and 83-76 to Ole Miss in Jackson, Mississippi.
Â
The Lions' last on-court victory over an SEC opponent was Nov. 28, 2005 when SLU defeated Mississippi State, 57-46, on the road. Prior to that, Southeastern edged LSU, 89-88, Dec. 1, 1966 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Â
