BIRMINGHAM, Ala.  – The Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team continues their 11-game road trip Saturday afternoon when they take on UAB at 2 p.m. at Bartow Arena.
Â
The Lions (0-1) are coming off a tough loss in the season opener to Purdue Fort Wayne, 67-63, in overtime. Despite shooting 1-for-28 from the three-point line, SLU rallied from a 12-point deficit in the second half thanks to their relentless defense that forced PFW into 31 turnovers.
Nick Caldwell scored a career-high 20 points to pace the Lions.
Â
The Lions nearly left Fort Wayne with a victory as SLU's
Isiah Kirby scored with 21 seconds left in OT to give the Lions a 63-62 advantage. But PFW's Jalon Pipkins scored on a lay-up and converted a free throw with 12 seconds left. Southeastern had a chance to send the game to double overtime with two seconds left, but SLU was unable to convert at the free throw line.
Â
SLU turns their attention to Saturday's matchup with UAB (1-0). The Blazers defeated Alcorn State in the season opener Wednesday at home, 99-50. Five players scored in double figures for UAB led by sophomore Jalen Benjamin. The Blazers shot 31-for-58 from the field (54 percent) while shooting 31-for-39 (79 percent) from the free throw line.
Â
The Lions will make game time decisions on the statuses of
Gus Okafor (6-6, 230, F) and
Elijah Ifejeh (6-8, 240, F). Both were penciled in as starters prior to the season but missed Wednesday's game against PFW with injuries.
Â
Following Saturday's game with the Blazers, Southeastern will get set for a showdown Monday night at 7 p.m. against the LSU Tigers at the Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
