CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team travels Saturday afternoon in search of their first win road win of the season when they face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 3:30 p.m. in the American Bank Center.
Â
The Lions (3-10, 0-2 Southland) are looking to snap a four-game losing streak following Thursday afternoon's loss to Stephen F. Austin (12-2, 3-0 Southland) at home, 82-71. SLU opened the game on a 10-3 run but found themselves in a 42-26 hole at halftime. Southeastern mounted a rally in the second half cutting the deficit to 73-67 with 3:05 to go. But SFA converted 15 of 18 free throws in the second half to keep the Lions at bay.
Â
Freshman
Byron Smith led Southeastern scoring 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting including a trio of three-pointers. Freshman
Isiah Kirby added 11 points on three three-pointers as well. But the Lions were outrebounded 38-27 and outscored 30-16 in the paint.
Â
The Islanders (5-9, 1-2 Southland) defeated Northwestern State, 67-62, Thursday night at home thanks to 22 points from JaShawn Talton-Thomas. The senior from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma is averaging 12.6 points per game and shoots 40 percent (22-for-55) from the three-point line.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi is led by junior guard Myles Smith. A Klein, Texas native, Smith is averaging 15.1 points per game and shooting 41 percent (25-for-61) from the three-point line. The Islanders, similar to the Lions, also gave a pair of SEC foes all they could handle during their non-conference schedule. Vanderbilt edged the Islanders, 71-66, while Texas A&M slipped past A&M-Corpus Christi, 63-60.
Â
The Islanders have had the upper handed in the all-time series against SLU winning 11 out of 15 meetings. However, the Lions defeated A&M-Corpus Christi last year, 64-58, for their first ever win on the road against the Islanders. Former Lion
Marlain Veal scored 27 points and drilled seven three-pointers to lead the way. SLU capped it off by making seven of eight free throws in the final minute to hold off the Islanders.
