Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

SLU falls at 14th-Ranked Memphis

Memphis Outshoots Lady Lions, 36-1

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The 14th-ranked Memphis Tigers scored six goals in the first 28 minutes in route to a 6-0 win over the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team Thursday night at Billy J. Murphy Soccer Complex.

The Lady Tigers (6-1-0) outshot Southeastern (1-4-1) 36-1 and had 12 corner kicks to one for the Lady Lions.

Memphis got a pair of goals from Samantha Murphy and single goals each from Clarissa Larisey, Mya Jones, Tanya Boychuk and Allie Rathbun.

"Memphis is probably the best team I've ever seen in my coaching career," said third-year SLU soccer head coach Chris McBride. "Their desire and determination is incredible and their players play with a purpose. They are just really good players and really good athletes. It's a really good team, simple as that. I believe they are a championship caliber team without question."

However, the SLU defense refocused in the second half and didn't allow a goal over the final 62 minutes of the match.

"The first half was rough," said McBride. "We didn't have the mentality we needed to compete against a team of that caliber. I thought in the second half we came out and played more like we are capable of and had the mentality we want regardless."

Southeastern's Aubree Dillon got a shot on goal in the second half while freshman goalkeeper Sophie Wendt saved five shots in 67 minutes.

Memphis has outscored their opponents 22-3 in their first seven matches including a 4-0 win over Mississippi State on the road, a 3-1 win over Ole Miss, and a 6-0 win over SLU's next opponent, Little Rock.

Southeastern played shorthanded Thursday without freshman speedster Ellie Williams who was out with a sinus infection.

"We really could have used her," said McBride. "She could have helped us slow down down their attack a little bit better than we did. But that's taking nothing from Memphis. They were nothing short of incredible."

Next up, the Lady Lions will make the two-hour trip west to Little Rock, Arkansas to face the Little Rock Trojans Saturday at 1 p.m.

Live stats will be available for Saturday's match at the Southeastern Soccer schedule page at lionsports.net.

After Saturday's match, the Lady Lions will have six days off before opening the Southland schedule Friday, Sept. 20 at McNeese.
