SLU Drops Second Game of Road Trip to Little Rock, 2-0

Lady Lions Shut Out at Little Rock

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Little Rock's Bergros Asgeirsdottir scored in the eighth minute to give ULR the lead for good in Saturday's 2-0 win over the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team at Coleman Sports Complex.

The Lady Lions (1-5-1) fell behind when Asgeirsdottir scored her first goal of the season off a corner kick from Morgan Smocovich.

The Trojans (3-4-1) added to their lead in the 66th minute when Jessica Carmichael passed to Mari Young. Young, a freshman from Oakville, Ontario, Canada, beat the SLU defense and punched in the second goal of the match.

Little Rock outshot the Lady Lions 8-4 while both teams attempted three corner kicks.

Southeastern's Sophie Wendt, a freshman from Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, got her first career start recording two saves.

SLU was led by freshman Jessica Hyde with two shots while Paityn Bretzer, a sophomore from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, had a shot on goal.

"Every day we are learning more about our team," said McBride. "We have a lot of players out with injuries and sicknesses. But I like the fact that even when we got down today, we kept fighting and I think right now we are in a good spot going to conference.

Senior Brogan Bernadas and senior Amber Marinero, who is working her way back from a knee injury, drew positive recognition from McBride following Saturday's match.

"Brogan and Amber really did a good job of helping us put pressure on their defense," said McBride. "I'm expecting great things from both of them as we get into conference play."

Saturday's match concluded Southeastern's rigorous non-conference schedule that included 15th-ranked Tennessee (5-1), 14th-ranked Memphis (6-1), Louisiana Tech (8-0-1), South Alabama (4-2-1) and a much improved ULM (2-3-1) team.

"The schedule has been exactly what we wanted," said McBride. "I wanted to us to be facing the best competition possible as though we were playing in a conference championship final. I think we grew tremendously in the last couple of weeks and will see the results from the non-conference schedule."

Next up, the Lady Lions will have six days off before opening the Southland schedule Friday, Sept. 20 at McNeese at 7 p.m.
