Lady Lions Battle ULM to 1-1 Tie

Guillory's Second Half Goal Secures Tie for Lady Lions

HAMMOND, La. – Mya Guillory scored her first career goal in the 69th minute off a corner kick from Paityn Bretzer to secure a 1-1 tie for the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team Sunday at home against ULM.

The Lady Lions (0-1-1) fell behind in the first period when ULM's Taylor Altieri scored on a cross from McKenzie Rizqi in the 22nd minute. Southeastern managed just four shots in the first period as they trailed at the half, 1-0.

SLU came out strong in the second period. The Lady Lions attempted four shots in the first nine minutes after halftime but were unable to cash in.

Sophomore Brogan Bernadas made a beautiful move to free herself from a defender using a stutter-step and dribbling right past the defense. The Covington, Louisiana native, went hard to her right and drilled a shot that sailed just inches above the goal post.

Southeastern continued to put the pressure on ULM and were rewarded for it. Guillory, a freshman, got free on the backside of the defense after a corner kick from Bretzer. The Prairieville, Louisiana native, punched it into the top left corner of the next to tie the game.

The Warhawks (0-1-1) remained on the defense through the remainder of the second half and overtime attempting just two shots.

"It was a beautiful ball from Paityn (Bretzer)," said Guillory. "The ball was bouncing around in the box and I was able to play it off my chest and finish it."

Guillory, the St. Amant High School grad, earned the praises of third-year SLU soccer head coach Chris McBride after finishing with five shots and three on goal.

"Mya was exceptional tonight," said McBride. "That's two games in a row now that she's been terrific. She controlled the game and has been so good with the ball and getting her teammates involved."

However, SLU had to dodge one more big threat from the Warhawks. ULM's Camryn Ciaramella looked like she was about to give the Warhawks the lead after a breakaway. But sophomores Jamie Raines and Claire Huston teamed up to make a spectacular play. Raines cut off Ciaramella 15 yards from the net forcing her to her left just enough allowing Huston to chase her down and knock the ball away to help secure the tie for SLU.

The Lady Lions outshot the Warhawks 14-7 for the match and 10-2 in the second period and overtime periods. Ciaramella led ULM with four shots, all on goal.

"We played two really good defensive teams this weekend," said McBride. "Both teams (ULM and Louisiana Tech) came out and played a 5-4-1 and when you play against five (defenders) in the back it's really tough to break them down. Both Louisiana Tech and ULM were really organized and made it difficult for us to get in behind them. It was also tough to go through them and then it started to rain a little bit and the surface got slick and slowed us down a bit. But I'm proud of the girls for showing resilience tonight and battling back the way we did."

Next up for the Lady Lions, they will host Jackson State Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. at Strawberry Stadium.
