HAMMOND, La. – Freshman
Ellie Williams scored two goals in the first two minutes of the match as the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team rolled past Jackson State, 4-0, Friday afternoon at Strawberry Stadium.
Â
The Lady Lions (1-1-1) outshot JSU 25-1 for the match which was the most shots attempted by SLU since the season opener last season against Alcorn State (31).
Â
Southeastern's first goal came on a double assist. Freshman
Mya Guillory found sophomore
Paityn Bretzer who played a perfect cross to Williams for the goal just 58 seconds into the match.
Â
Less than a minute later, the speedy Williams struck again as she got in the open field after a beautiful lead from sophomore
Brogan Bernadas to punch in her second goal of the match.
Â
"The first goal was a really nice cross from the outside by Paityn," said Williams. "We were working on that in practice this week and I actually had a chance last week to score on a play just like this one but missed. And then the second one I was able to play off my left foot and slip it just inside the goalkeeper."
Â
Williams wasn't done. In the 17
th minutes, the Frisco, Texas native, found fellow freshman
Victoria Brackmann on a cross for the goal making it 3-0, Lady Lions.
Â
Southeastern scored once more late on a nice lead from Hannah Moffat to
Jessica Hyde with just 12 seconds left in the match.
Â
"We started really strong," said third-year SLU soccer head coach Chris McBride. "And that was the biggest thing for us after coming out slow against ULM and a little flat. The big impact we wanted on this game was to come out with more intensity than we did the previous two games. Jackson State was a very physical team and their new coach (Dr. Ted Flogaites) has done a good job of teaching them the game. It was difficult at times to win the loose balls because of their spacing and that challenged us."
Â
Friday marks the 28
th time the Lady Lions have allowed one goal or less in 39 matches under McBride.
Â
Next up, the Lady Lions will have six days off before hitting the road to face the Tennessee Lady Vols (2-1) Thursday, Sept. 5 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Â
"Our non-conference schedule was built to challenge us," said McBride. "Louisiana Tech, ULM and Jackson State were all challenges. Tennessee will be a different challenge but still a challenge. And each game we want to make sure we learn, grow and face some adversity and every game thus we far we have done that. Thursday, Tennessee will certainly do all that to us as well. We are going to have to be organized and disciplined and be switched on for 90 minutes. They are one of the best teams in the country and we are going to have to make sure we are confident in our abilities and locked in."
Â
The SEC Network+, available on www.WatchESPN.com and the WatchESPN app, will provide a video stream of Thursday's match. Web links to audio, video and stats are available on the soccer schedule page at
