HAMMOND, La.  – Southeastern Louisiana Athletics had 57 graduates among the 1,100 who had degrees conferred at the university's spring commencement exercises Saturday in the University Center.
 
The Southeastern Louisiana baseball team had a department-high 15 graduates on Saturday. 2019 Southland Conference Pitcher of the Year Corey Gaconi, who was honored at last month's Lion Choice Awards presented by Chick-fil-A as the male senior student-athlete with the highest grade point average, highlighted the Lions' contingent.
 
He was joined by fellow 2019 All-Southland teammates Jared Biddy, Cody Grosse, Mason Knopp and Kyle Schimpf.
 
Multi-time All-American Devin King and 2019 Southland Indoor Male Athlete of the Year D.J. Ruffin, as well as Clarissa Smith, who was recognized at the Lion Choice Awards as the female senior student-athlete with the highest GPA, were among the six graduates from the track and field program.
 
Another multi-time All-American, Juwan Petit-Frere, was one on five football graduates. Petit-Frere will be one of the key returners when the Lion football team opens the season on Aug. 29 versus Jacksonville State. All-Southland performers Sofia Olsson and Christina Cutura were among the four women's soccer graduates.
 
The men's basketball, women's basketball and men's golf teams each had three graduates apiece on Saturday. Among that group were All-Southland Conference performers Moses Greenwood, Marlain Veal and Joris Etlin.
 
Lexie Torres (volleyball) and Caitlyn VanHemelryck (softball) were the lone representatives from their respective sports. Southeastern also graduated 16 nonstudent-athletes, including athletic trainers, cheerleaders, Lionettes, Diamond Girls and athletic department student personnel.
