UNO Edges SLU in Defensive Struggle

Lady Lions close 2018-19 at Nicholls on Saturday at 1 p.m.

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team dropped another nail biter on Wednesday, coming out on the wrong end of a 46-45 decision to New Orleans in Southland Conference action at the Lakefront Arena.

Southeastern (9-19, 4-13 Southland) dropped its seventh straight contest and lost by less than five points for the fourth time during its current losing streak. UNO (12-15, 8-10 Southland) locked down a spot in next week's Southland Conference Tournament with Wednesday's victory.

The Lady Lions were down by two on the final possession and Jaclyn Scholvin drew a foul in the final seconds. She made the first of two free throws, but the potential game-tying shot missed the mark and the Privateers came away with the victory.

Scholvin led SLU with 13 points, while also sharing game-high honors with Charliee Dugas with four assists apiece. Celica Sterling joined Scholvin in double figures with 10 points, while she and Kyla Williams each had a team-high five rebounds. Tyler Morrison finished with four steals to lead SLU.

Shania Woods paced UNO with 17 points and 17 rebounds in a double-double effort. Whitley Larry added five blocked shots, while also grabbing nine boards for the Privateers, who finished with an overwhelming 49-33 advantage on the glass.

Neither team led by more than four points throughout Wednesday's contest. The game featured seven ties and a whopping 20 lead changes.

Southeastern took its last lead with 3:44 remaining, as a Sterling jumper fell to put SLU ahead, 44-43. After the two teams traded empty possessions, Woods made the game's final field goal to put UNO ahead for good with 2:50 left.

The two teams combined to go 0-for-5 over the next two minutes, before Kayla Thomas drew a foul on SLU's Kyla Williams with just over a minute left. Thomas made one of two to push the lead to 46-44 and got her own rebound on the miss, but Dugas picked up a steal to give the Lady Lions the ball back.

Dugas shot missed on the other end and UNO's Jada Duncantell grabbed the defensive rebound. Dionjhae Thomas turned it over with 26 seconds left, giving SLU one last chance. Scholvin drew a foul on Rehema Franklin in the waning seconds, but missed her first free throw of the game in a team-high eight attempts to prevent the game from going to overtime.

Southeastern will close out the season on Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest at Nicholls. The SLU-Nicholls game will air live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), online at www.LionSports.net/listenlive and via the TuneIn Radio and Lions Game Day Experience apps.
