THIBODAUX, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team closed out the 2018-19 season with a 72-55 loss at Southland Conference foe Nicholls Saturday afternoon at Stopher Gymnasium.
The Lady Lions (9-20, 4-14 Southland) closed the season with an eight-game losing streak. Nicholls (20-10, 14-4 Southland) won its seventh straight contest, secured its first 20-win season in program history and will be the No. 3 seed in next week's Southland Conference Tournament at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas.
Southeastern was within striking distance at halftime, trailing 27-23. A three by
Celica Sterling cut the Nicholls lead to one early in the third quarter. The rest of the period was all Colonels, as the hosts shot 64.3 percent (9-for-14) on the way to outscoring SLU, 25-12, in the quarter and taking a 52-35 lead into the final period.
Nicholls would grow its lead to as much as 23 in the final quarter and SLU could get no closer than the 17-point final margin.
Sterling made five threes to lead SLU with 18 points. Sterling was joined in double figures by
Jaclyn Scholvin, who netted 12 points in her final game as a Lady Lion.
Charliee Dugas grabbed a team-high six rebounds and led the Lady Lions with a game-high four steals, while
Tyler Morrison finished with a team-high five assists.
Southeastern netted 10 three-point field goals in Saturday's loss with Sterling running her team-high season total to 65. In her final game in a Southeastern uniform,
Ashailee Brailey netted two treys to give her 103 for her career – good for eighth on the program's career list.
Southland Conference Player of the Year candidate Cassidy Barrios led the way for Nicholls in her final career home game, posting team-high totals of 25 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and three steals. Adrian Mann added 20 points for the Colonels, who shot 53.1 percent (26-for-49) from the floor in the win.
Scholvin, Brailey and
Kyla Williams all ended their time in a Southeastern uniform on Saturday. Sterling, Dugas, Morrison and Caitlin Williams comprise a solid returning nucleus for 2019-20, while newcomers Bren'naisa Adams, Hailey Giarantano, Daija Harvey, Alexius Horne and Jaylen Huderson will provide an influx of new talent. SLU will also be buoyed by the return of
Jyar Francis, who redshirted in 2018-19 after off-season surgery.
