HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana junior guard
Celica Sterling was named to the 2018-19 All-Southland Conference Women's Basketball Teams, which were announced by the league office on Wednesday.
The second-generation Lady Lion and daughter of former SLU All-American Sharon Berry was an honorable mention selection. The Baton Rouge native was Southeastern's leading scorer in her debut season out of Baton Rouge Community College.
Sterling's team-high 13.8 points per game put her among the Southland's top 10 scorers. Much of her damage was done behind the arc, as her 65 total three-point field goals and 2.2 three-point field goals per game were both good for third in the league. Sterling also ranking sixth in the conference with a 37.6 three-point field goal percentage.
Sterling scored in double figures in 21 games this season and posted six games of 20 or more points. Her best scoring performance came in a 63-62 win at SMU, where she scored 29 points and set a Moody Coliseum record with eight three-point field goals.
"Celica scored in a variety of ways for us this season," Southeastern head coach
Ayla Guzzardo said. "We asked her to do a lot for us offensively and she was up to the task. Her teammates also did an excellent job finding her when she was open."
Sterling,
Charliee Dugas,
Tyler Morrison and Caitlin Williams comprise a solid returning nucleus for 2019-20, while newcomers Bren'naisa Adams, Hailey Giarantano, Daija Harvey, Alexius Horne and Jaylen Huderson will provide an influx of new talent.
"We're excited about what Celica can do in her senior season with more offensive firepower around her," Guzzardo said. "We're bringing in some new faces that can flat out score and should be able to lessen the pressure on Celica."
Southland regular season champion Lamar took home three of the individual awards. Senior guard Chastadie Barrs was named Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, while teammate Miya Crump was tabbed the league's top freshman. Jaylonn Walker (Newcomer of the Year) and Ravon Justice (Coach of the Year) were honored after helping Sam Houston State earn the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament after winning just one league game in 2017-18.
All-conference teams and individual awards are nominated and voted upon by the league's head coaches and sports information directors. Voting for your own institution's nominees is not permitted. You must appear on at least 25 percent of the ballots to earn honorable mention recognition.
