CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Winners of five of the last six games, the reigning Southland Conference champion Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team hits the road to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at American Bank Center.
The Lions (9-13, 5-4 Southland), after an 0-3 start to the conference schedule, are in fourth place in the conference standings going into Wednesday night's matchup against the Islanders.
"We've given ourselves a fighting chance now," said fifth-year SLU head basketball coach
Jay Ladner. "We kind of put ourselves in a hole early but have been able to fight back and get back into the middle of this thing."
SLU has been terrific on the road through the first half of Southland play boasting a 3-1 record away from the University Center. The Lions defeated McNeese (74-71), Houston Baptist (70-67) and Northwestern State (69-53) on the road with their lone setback coming to Stephen F. Austin, 65-60, in Nacogdoches, Texas.
"The difference between good teams and bad teams is being able to win on the road," said Ladner. "And fortunately we have been good thus far. One thing that you can do no matter where you play is defend and rebound, as we say "defense travels," and we have been able to do that early on in conference."
Southeastern split two games at home last week falling to league-leading Sam Houston State (14-8, 9-0 Southland), 62-52, Wednesday night and defeating Nicholls (10-12, 3-6 Southland), 91-70, Saturday afternoon.
SLU had a season-high in points and assists in Saturday's win over the Colonels scoring 91 points and dishing out 25 assists. Senior
Moses Greenwood led the Lions with 21 points and 10 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season. Senior
Marlain Veal added 13 points and nine assists while Junior
Von Julien had 10 points and seven assists.
Greenwood and Veal are on the cusp of a few personal milestones.
Veal, the New Orleans, Louisiana native, is one point away from becoming the third player in SLU history with at least 1,500 career points. Wednesday will also mark Veal's 121
st career game giving him the all-time record in games played passing Brandon Fortenberry (2008-13).
Greenwood, the Sharon, Mississippi native, will tie Fortenberry for second all-time in games played with 120. The Velma Jackson Grad is also tied with Amir Abdur Rahim for ninth all-time in SLU scoring history (1,282 points) going into Wednesday's game.
The Lions will be looking for their first ever win at A&M-Corpus Christi (9-12, 4-4 Southland). SLU is 0-7 all-time on the road against the Islanders and has lost six straight overall including falling, 67-54, last year at home. Southeastern's last win over The Islanders was Jan. 26, 2013 at the University Center, 67-53.
"This is another goal we can set for ourselves," since Ladner. "This is the only team since I've been here that we haven't beaten. They are a very good team that, like us, is close to having more wins in the conference then they have with a couple of games that could have gone either way. But they are really a quality team that will make things difficult on us with their defense. They swarm the post and do a good job of stopping guard penetration, real similar to Sam Houston, so you have to be able to make some outside shots to negate everything they do. Some teams are a harder matchup than others and this one is difficult one for us."
The Islanders are coming off a pair of road losses to Abilene Christian, 78-71, and Houston Baptist, 73-72.
A&M-Corpus is led by junior guard Kareem South (6-2, 185). The Toronto, Canada native leads the team in scoring (13.6), rebounds (5.7), steals (33), three-pointers (34) and free throws (56) and is second in assists (44).
Wednesday's game can be heard live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), online at
www.LionSports.net/listenlive and via the Lions Game Day Experience, Radio FX and TuneIn Radio apps.
After Wednesday's matchup with the Islanders, the Lions will head to Conway, Arkansas to face Central Arkansas (10-13, 5-5 Southland) Saturday at 4 p.m.
