HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team will dedicate its 7 p.m. Southland Conference contest versus New Orleans on Wednesday in the University Center to the fight against cancer by participating in the national Play4Kay initiative.
Cancer survivors are invited to a special pre-game 6 p.m. reception in the St. Tammany Room and to be honored during the game. The first 150 fans and 50 students will receive a Play4Kay t-shirt. Several campus organizations are raising money through a bike-a-thon at the game. All proceeds will benefit the Kay Yow Fund, named for the late North Carolina State legendary coach who inspired the Play4Kay initiative.
Wednesday will also be a Cane's Challenge at the UC. If the Lady Lions score 50 or more points versus the Privateers, fans will be able to take their game ticket or student coupon to their local participating Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers to receive a free combo with the purchase of another of equal or greater value.
Jaclyn Scholvin will be Wednesday's Spotlight Player of the Game. The first 150 fans at the SLU-UNO tilt will receive a trading card featuring the Mandeville, Louisiana native courtesy of PRIDE.
The Lady Lions (9-15, 4-9 Southland) are looking to snap a three-game losing skid on Wednesday. SLU's recent struggles have Southeastern trailing in the race to secure a top-eight finish and a berth in next month's Southland Conference Tournament.
The team currently holding the No. 8 seed is New Orleans (9-13, 5-8 Southland), which has won four of its last five games heading into Wednesday's contest. SLU plays UNO twice in the final five games.
Long-range shooting was detrimental to Southeastern during its 0-2 showing last week. On Wednesday, UIW held off a late Lady Lion rally thanks to 10 made three-point field goals in a 76-69 victory. McNeese rallied from a 17-point deficit on Saturday in a 75-70 win over the Lady Lions, thanks in large part to 14 made three-point field goals.
The Cowgirls' shooting spoiled strong offensive performances by Scholvin (career-high 23 points) and
Charliee Dugas (season-high 21 points). Scholvin (10.0 ppg), Dugas (9.3 ppg) and
Celica Sterling (14.6 ppg) are the top scoring trio for the Lady Lions.
Against UNO, Southeastern's primary focus must be slowing down Shania Woods. Woods leads the Privateers with 14.6 points and 8.2 rebounds per contest in 2018-19.
Charged with keeping Woods off the boards will be
Caitlyn Williams. The Brusly, Louisiana native paces Southeastern with 7.1 rebounds per game.
The two in-state and Southland Conference rivals will be meeting for the 46
th time on Wednesday. UNO leads the all-time series, 24-21, and has won seven of the last eight meetings between the Lady Lions and Privateers.
Last season in Hammond, Southeastern fell behind by 24 points, but rallied before ultimately falling, 74-71. The Lady Lions' rally falling short spoiled a career night from Dugas, who netted a career-high 38 points in the loss.
Following Wednesday's contest, Southeastern will hit the road on Saturday, traveling to Abilene Christian for a 1 p.m. league contest. The SLU-ACU game will be broadcast on ESPN3 and can also be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), online at
