HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team opens the final month of the regular season with a 6:30 p.m. Southland Conference contest on Wednesday at Incarnate Word.
The Lady Lions (9-13, 4-7 Southland) will be fighting down the stretch to earn a spot in next month's Southland Conference Tournament. SLU is currently tied for seventh place in the standings and the top eight teams will compete in the league tournament.
For Southeastern to return to the postseason for the first time since the 2011-12 season, it will have to turn the tables on the road, as four of the last seven for SLU are away from the University Center. The Lady Lions are 0-5 in league competition on the road, including a rough 75-33 loss at Central Arkansas on Saturday.
Something will have to give on Wednesday, as UIW (2-19, 2-8 Southland) is 1-7 thus far this season on their home court in the McDermott Center. While SLU is looking to end its road struggles, the Cardinals is hoping to snap a three-game losing skid.
Wednesday's matchup figures to be a low-scoring affair, as Southeastern (56.2 ppg team average) and Incarnate Word (54.4 ppg) are the two lowest scoring teams in the Southland Conference.
Lady Lion guard
Celica Sterling is averaging 15.4 points per game and is the only player on either team averaging in double figures. The Cardinals are led by the duo of Imani Robinson (9.5 ppg) and Starr Omozee (9.3 ppg).
In
Tyler Morrison (3.6 apg, 6
th) and
Jaclyn Scholvin (3.0 apg, 11
th), the Lady Lions feature two of the Southland's assists leaders. Robinson leads UIW with 2.4 assists per outing.
Both SLU and Incarnate Word have struggled on the boards, as both teams are being out-rebounded by an average of just over seven rebounds per game.
Caitlyn Williams leads Southeastern with 6.9 rebounds per outing, while Omozee's 6.3 rebounds per contest paces the Cardinals.
The Lady Lions have the advantage defensively, as opponents are averaging 64.5 points per game versus SLU and 74.9 points per contest against Incarnate Word. Morrison and Scholvin share the team lead with 40 steals, while Williams has a team-high 16 blocked shots. Robinson is UIW's top defender with a team-high 37 steals and 12 blocked shots.
Southeastern is 2-4 all-time versus UIW. The Cardinals had won four games in a row in the series before SLU snapped the streak with a 65-54 victory over Incarnate Word last season in Hammond. Southeastern has not won in San Antonio since the Cardinals joined the Southland Conference.
On Saturday, the Lady Lions will host McNeese at 1 p.m. in the University Center to open a Southland Conference doubleheader, with the men's 4 p.m. contest serving as the nightcap.
The SLU-McNeese game will be heard live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), online at
