MONROE, La. – Morgan Carrier led three Lady Lions in double figures, as Southeastern Louisiana snapped a four-game losing streak with a 65-52 road victory over ULM in nonconference action Sunday afternoon in Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
The Lady Lions (1-4) picked up its first victory of the season with a complete effort. Carrier's season-high performance helped Southeastern drop ULM to 1-4 overall.
Carrier was joined in double figures by
Celica Sterling and
Charliee Dugas with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Alexius Horne led SLU with six assists, while
Jyar Francis had nine points off the bench.
"It's a weight off our shoulders to get that first victory," Southeastern head coach
Ayla Guzzardo said. "Morgan and Celica are both great shooters and they made shots for us today."
While the offensive balance was key to victory, it was the Southeastern defensive effort that made the biggest difference. The Lady Lions forced ULM into 23 turnovers, as Horne recorded three steals, while Sterling, Dugas and
Aminat Jubril had two steals each.
"We spend a lot of time working on defense and we know that has to be the most consistent part of our game," Guzzardo commented. "We're going to have games where shots aren't falling, but good defense should be consistent. Our goal was to hold ULM under 50, but we were pleased with today's effort."
Amber Thompson led ULM with 15 points, while Kierra Crockett narrowly missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Thompson also lex the Warhawks with four assists.
After ULM took a 14-12 lead after a competitive opening quarter, SLU took the lead for good in the second quarter. Threes by Horne, Carrier and
Hailey Giaratano keyed a 10-4 run to close the half and sent the Lady Lions into the break with a 28-23 advantage.
The Lady Lions edged ahead further in the third quarter, holding ULM to two field goals in the period and went into the final quarter with a 42-34 advantage.
Southeastern tore up the nets with a 77.8 field goal percentage in the final quarter to pull away. SLU grew the lead to as much as 17 down the stretch on the way to their first win of 2019-20.
