Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lions Push Tulsa to the Brink, But Fall 73-66

SLU Upset Bid Falls Just Short

TULSA, Okla. – The Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team gave the University of Tulsa all they could handle before falling, 73-66, Wednesday night at the Reynolds Center.

The Lions (2-3) had four players score in double figures led by sophomore Ty Brewer with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Junior Pape Diop added 13 points and nine rebounds. Junior Brandon Gonzalez and senior Von Julien each chipped in with 10 points.

The Golden Hurricane (4-1) were led by junior Brandon Rachal with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Darien Jackson added 18 points and seven rebounds for Tulsa.

SLU withstood an early run by the Golden Hurricane as the Lions fell behind, 18-6 with 14:16 left in the first half. Southeastern rallied to take a 27-26 lead with 7:11 remaining in the first half. The game was tied at 34-34 at halftime.

The Lions and Golden Hurricane were tied at 59-59 with 5:03 to go before Tulsa went on an 8-0 run over the next three minutes. The Golden Hurricane led 67-59 with 2:08 left as they held on for the win.

"I thought the guys' effort was tremendous," said SLU men's head basketball coach David Kiefer. "We played hard all 40 minutes but a couple of key live ball turnovers we had that hurt us along with some little mistakes at crucial times that hurt us. But we made a lot of progress tonight and I'm proud of the guys."

Tulsa shot 20-for-28 from the free throw line while the Lions shot 6-for-12. The Lions shot 27-for-57 from the field while Tulsa was 25-for-55.

Next up, the Lions will travel to Clarksville, Tennessee to take on Austin Peay State Saturday afternoon at 7 p.m.
