HOUSTON, Texas – Jamie Raines scored off an assist from
Jada Ellis in the 14
th minute as the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team defeated Houston Baptist University Friday night at Sorrels Field.
Â
The Lady Lions (2-8-1, 1-3-0 Southland) scored when Raines headed one into the back of the net, set up beautifully by Ellis, for her first goal of the season. Â
Â
Ellis, a junior from Toronto, Canada, got a free kick near midfield and lofted it perfectly less than 10 feet in front of the HBU net. Raines, a sophomore from Covington, Louisiana, darted it in and took the kick off a bounce and headed it in.
Â
"Jamie attacked the ball as she has all year," said third-year SLU soccer head coach Chris McBride. "It was a great delivery from Jada but both of them really did a good job of doing exactly what we wanted and executing beautifully."
Â
SLU outshot the Huskies, 5-2, in the first period and didn't allow a shot on goal or corner kick in the first 45 minutes.
Â
In the second period, the Lady Lions continued to attack getting two free kicks from 30 yard out but came up empty.
Â
HBU's best chance came in the 61
st minute when Ryan Ford launched a shot from 20 yards out. The ball was ticketed for the top left corner of the net but SLU goalkeeper
Nadine Maher made a spectacular save leaping high to her right to deflect the shot away.
Â
"It was a great performance for us," said McBride. "The early goal really helped us set a good pace. HBU really did a good job of attacking and sending runners and we had to make sure we were paying attention at all times. I thought we defended well all night and the play by Nadine was huge. But overall it was just a complete team effort and good performance and I'm proud as can be of our girls tonight."
Â
Maher, the Dublin, Ireland native, finished the match with three saves giving her 53 for the season.
Â
Megan Gordon led SLU with two shots and one on goal.
Claire Huston and Mia Guillory each attempted a shot as well.
Â
Next up, SLU will make the 200-mile drive to Corpus Christi, Texas Saturday morning in preparation for Sunday's match at 1 p.m. against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (5-5-1, 2-1-1 Southland). The Islanders are coming off a 2-0 win over Nicholls (3-7-1, 0-4-0 Southland) Friday at home.
