Own Goal Allows NSU to Edge Lady Lions, 1-0, in Home Finale

SLU Eliminated from Postseason

HAMMOND, La. – Northwestern State scored in the 49th minute after a free kick from 40 yards out deflected off a defender as the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team fell, 1-0, Sunday in the home finale.

The Lady Lions (3-13-1, 2-8-0 Southland) hopes of a bid to the Southland Conference Tournament were eliminated as SLU is now two games back of eighth place in the standings. Sunday was Southeastern's fourth 1-0 loss in Southland Conference matches this season.

NSU (10-7-1, 7-2-1 Southland) outshot the Lady Lions 9-2 for the match but SLU was able to rush the Lady Demons for the majority of the match.

In the first period, the Lady Lions came within inches of taking the lead. Hitomi Konno, a junior, got in front of the net after a great cross from sophomore Paityn Bretzer. Konno deflected it towards the net but the shot was saved by NSU goalkeeper Aceyla Aydogmus just before the ball crossed the goal line keeping the match scoreless at halftime.

The Lady Demons were the beneficiaries of a goal early in the second half after a free kick from 40 yards out deflected off the head of an SLU defender for the only goal of the match.

"We competed well again and tried some different formations," said third-year SLU soccer head coach Chris McBride. "We had a couple of chances in the first half to capitalize but the second half, we really lacked opportunities."

Southeastern will wrap up the season Friday at 4 p.m. when they face Nicholls (3-13-1, 0-10 Southland) on the road. Fans can follow the match at the Southeastern Soccer Schedule page at the live stats link.
