Fourth-Quarter Surge Sinks SLU at Northwestern State

Lady Lions back in action on Wednesday at Sam Houston State

NATCHITOCHES, La. – Northwestern State outscored Southeastern Louisiana, 19-4, in the final quarter to rally past the Lady Lions for a 58-47 victory in Southland Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Prather Coliseum.

Southeastern (8-10, 3-4 Southland) continues to search for its first league road win, as the Lady Lions lost for the third time in as many tries in Southland games away from home. Northwestern State (7-11, 2-5 Southland) forced the Lady Lions into 22 turnovers to snap a four-game losing streak and improve to 7-2 this season on its home court.

SLU's Celica Sterling led all scorers with 19 points, while Caitlyn Williams added 10 points for the Lady Lions. Williams and Sterling shared team-high honors with seven rebounds, while Jaclyn Scholvin dished out a game-high six assists.

RaVon Nero was the lone Lady Demon in double figures with 16 points. Libba Gilliam chipped in with eight points and eight rebounds, while Gabby Bell led NSU with five assists and paced all players with three steals.

Southeastern scored on its first four possessions to take a 7-2 lead early in the opening quarter. However, Northwestern State held SLU to six points the rest of the period and went into the second quarter with an 18-13 advantage.

A three by Jasmym Johnson extended the Lady Demon lead to 23-15 with 7:35 left in the second quarter. However, SLU would hold NSU without a field goal for the rest of the first half. Sterling scored seven points during a 9-2 Lady Lion run that cut the halftime lead to 25-24.

Southeastern scored the first six points of the third quarter, as Caitlyn and Kyla Williams combined for three straight buckets. Northwestern State came right back, as the third quarter featured four ties and three lead chances. A bucket by Caitlyn Williams and a three by Ashailee Brailey in the final minute sent SLU into the final period with a 43-39 cushion.

After NSU tied the game early in the fourth quarter, Sterling gave the Lady Lions their last lead on a basket with 7:32 left. From that point forward, Northwestern State took over, scoring the next 14 points over the next seven minutes. The Lady Demons forced Southeastern into 0-for-5 shooting and five turnovers during the game-deciding stretch.

Southeastern will be back on the road on Wednesday, when it travels to Sam Houston State for a 6:30 p.m. contest in Huntsville, Texas.
