HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team will open the road portion of its 2018-19 Southland Conference schedule when it travels to face league-leading Lamar on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Montagne Center in Beaumont, Texas.

The Lady Lions (7-7, 2-1 Southland) have won their last two games, while the host and defending Southland regular season champion Cardinals (11-4, 4-0 Southland) are riding a six-game winning streak.

Southeastern posted its best offensive performance of the season in Saturday's 74-71 win over Abilene Christian – the first Southland loss for the Wildcats. The Lady Lions shot 52.0 percent (26-for-50) from the floor, 52.2 percent (12-for-23) from three-point range and recorded 17 assists versus just 13 turnovers.

Celica Sterling led the Lady Lions with 21 points and was one of four SLU players in double figures. Kyla Williams added a career-high tying 11 points, while Jaclyn Scholvin and Charliee Dugas pitched in with 10 points each.

The Lady Lions' balanced attack also featured nine points apiece from Caitlyn Williams and Morgan Carrier. Tyler Morrison ably ran the offense, dishing out seven assists, while also pacing the defensive effort with four steals.

Southeastern will need a similar team effort to compete with a Lamar squad that features the most prolific scoring trio in the Southland, as Moe Kinard (18.9 ppg, 2nd), Chastadie Barrs (15.2 ppg, 5th) and Miya Crump (14.0 ppg, 9th) are all among the league's scoring leaders. Sterling (16.4 ppg, 3rd) is the only Lady Lions in the top 10.

In Sterling and Kinard, Wednesday's contest features two of the Southland's best long-range shooters. With 44 and 40 three-point field goals made, respectively, Sterling and Kinard rank 1-2 in the 2018-19 Southland rankings.

While it's Kinard who is the leading scorer for Lamar, Barrs is the Cards' most versatile player. Barrs leads the Southland in assists (5.9 apg) and steals (6.0 spg), while also ranking sixth in the league with a team-high 6.9 rebounds per contest.

Caitlyn Williams is SLU's leading rebounder, sitting seventh on the Southland leaderboard with 6.8 rebounds per game. Scholvin and Morrison are tied for eighth in the Southland with 3.4 assists per game, while Morrison leads the league with a 2.2 assist-to-turnover ratio.

The Lady Lion defense will be tested on Wednesday, but Southeastern has been good on that end all season, holding opponents to 60.9 points and 18.7 turnovers per game. Scholvin (2.2 spg, 5th) and Morrison (2.0 spg, 10th) are both among the league leaders in that category.

Southeastern holds a 22-18 lead in the all-time series versus Lamar. The Cards have had the upper hand in recent years, winning four of the last five meetings. SLU's last win in Beaumont came during the 2006-07 season.

Southeastern plays three of its next four away from home, as McNeese hosts SLU on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Lake Charles. Saturday's game can be heard live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), online at www.LionSports.net/listenlive and via the Lions Game Day Experience, RadioFX and TuneIn Radio apps.
