Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Houston Baptist edges SLU 2-1

Lady Lions fall to Huskies

HAMMOND, La. – Freshman Chloe Gallo's scored her first goal of the season for the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team but it wasn't enough to overcome two goals from Houston Baptist (5-5-1, 3-0-1 in the Southland) freshman Catalina Elwonger as SLU (5-4-2, 2-2-1) fell 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Strawberry Stadium.

After being rained out Friday, HBU came out fresh and aggressive. But the Lady Lions held strong through much of the first period until Elwonger scored with 1 minute left on an assist from Autumn Wildung.

The Huskies added to their lead early in the second period off a corner kick from Gabby Rodriquez who found Elwonger in front of the net making it 2-0.

SLU scored in the 87th minute on a goal by Chloe Gallo to make it 2-1. The Lady Lions didn't quit and had a chance to tie but couldn't capitalize as the shot sailed high with 10 seconds left.

Southeastern had several opportunities as they outshot HBU 15-11 but caught some tough breaks around the net.

"We created some really good chances," said second year SLU soccer head coach Chris McBride. "And at one point our own player blocked the ball for our chances. I think it showed in our legs today the effect of Friday's game when our opponent was fresh. HBU are incredibly dangerous going forward and caught us today a few times."

Freshman Brogan Bernadas and senior Payton Colson each had three shots to lead the way for SLU. Senior Sophia Olsson added two, both on goal.

Despite the tough loss, the Lady Lions had a solid weekend including getting their fifth win Friday night which matched their total from last season.

" We've made a lot of progress," said McBride. "I'm extremely happy with the teams performances this weekend. We had some good moments and we will be able to build on it this week."

The Lady Lions will return to action Friday on the road against reigning Southland Conference tournament and regular season champions, the Lamar Cardinals, at 7 p.m. in Beaumont, Texas.
