Lady Lions Battle Defending Conference Champs, Lamar to 0-0 Tie

SLU shuts out Lamar

BEAUMONT, Texas. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team battled step-for-step with defending Southland Conference Tournament and regular season champions, Lamar to a 0-0 tie Friday night on the road.

The Lady Lions (5-4-3, 2-2-2 in Southland Conference) proved they were ready to go from the outset. SLU and the Cardinals each attempted 11 shots in the first period and four on goal.

Lamar came into Friday having gone 16 matches without a Southland Conference loss dating back to Sept. 22, 2017.

The Cardinals were 14-1-0 at home overall coming into Friday night since the start of the 2017 season. Lamar's only home loss was to LSU Sept. 4 and had not been shutout at home in a Southland Conference match since Oct. 23, 2016 in a 1-0 loss to Houston Baptist. Tonight also ended a nine-match conference home winning streak.

"I thought our energy and effort was tremendous tonight," said second year SLU soccer head coach Chris McBride. "Playing away from home is always tough and playing the conference champions at their place is even tougher. We were really solid tonight."

The Lady Lions outshot Lamar 23 to 22 and including 8 to 7 on goal.

SLU was, again, balanced offensively as 11 different players attempted shots led by Megan Gordon and Lexie Gunderson. Gordon, the sophomore from Clophill, England had four shots including three on goal to pace the Lady Lions. Gunderson, a sophomore from Reading, Pennsylvania had four shots.

Sophomores Brogan Bernadas and Tilly Hallas-Potts both had three while seniors Sophia Olsson and Christina Cutura and junior Amber Marinero had two. Sophomore Jada Ellis and freshmen Jamie Raines and Mia Milton each had one shot.

Southeastern goalkeeper Nadine Maher continued her stellar play saving seven shots including a spectacular play in the first overtime. Lamar had a header opportunity from point blank range in the 92nd minute, but Maher, the sophomore from Dublin, Ireland, dove out and snagged it inches from the goal line.

"Nadine was composed in the goal all night," said McBride. "Especially when we needed her most and to get results you need your keeper to make one big save a game and the one in overtime was it for Nadine."

Lucy Ashworth led the Cardinals with six shots and four on goal.

The Lady Lions will be off Sunday. SLU returns to Strawberry Stadium next weekend for matches against Stephen F. Austin Friday, Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. and Sunday Oct. 14 at 1 p.m. against Sam Houston State.
