Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Olsson’s Goal Secures 1-1 Tie with SFA

Lady Lions and Lady Jacks tie

HAMMOND, La – Sophia Olsson's goal in the 61st minute helped the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team to a 1-1 tie Friday night at Strawberry Stadium against Stephen F. Austin.

The Lady Lions (5-4-4, 2-2-3 in the Southland Conference) fell behind in the first half on a goal by SFA's Sophia Fondren in the 17th minute.

The Ladyjacks (3-6-3, 1-3-3) outshot SLU 5-1 in the first half. But SLU never let up their intensity. Olsson, the senior defender from Orust, Sweden, got a loose ball in front of the net and drilled home her first goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1.

"It was two teams fighting for a conference tournament spot," said SLU soccer head coach Chris McBride. "It's getting that time of the year where everyone is looking to pick up valuable points."

Friday's match was physical as the two teams combined for 27 fouls (SFA 14, SLU 13).

"It was certainly a very physical game," said McBride. "SFA is very unique and how they defend and I think that lead to a lot of one-on-one battles which led to some physicality."

SLU was outshot 17-8 for the match but never quit battling. Sophomore Nadine Maher finished with six saves to keep a very aggressive Stephen F. Austin offense at bay.

The Lady Lions used another balanced offensive attack to keep the Ladyjacks guessing.
Eight different players attempted shots for SLU including four on goal.

Southeastern will look to continue their pursuit of the conference tournament Sunday when they face Sam Houston State (3-8-3, 2-3-2) at 1 p.m. SHSU is coming off back-to-back wins over Northwestern State 1-0 and Nicholls 2-1 in overtime.
