Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Lady Lions Shutout Bearkats 2-0

SLU On Collision Course for Conference Tourney

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team got goals from Amber Marinero and Brogan Bernadas to secure a 2-0 win over Sam Houston State Sunday afternoon at Strawberry Stadium.

The Lady Lions (6-4-4, 3-2-3 in the Southland) outshot the Bearkats 16 to 7 including 10 to 3 in the second half.

Marinero, the junior from West Covina, California, got SLU on the board early in the second half on an assist from senior Sofia Olsson.

Later in the half, Bernadas, a freshman from Covington, Louisiana scored on an assist from Marinero. The goal was her fourth of the season and came on a tough angle from the far left side of the penalty box.

Southeastern used their depth to wear down SHSU as second year head coach Chris McBride played 25 different players.

"It was really a great performance for 90 minutes," said McBride. "It's always nice to come out on a Sunday and play very well. The game plan very well and we were able to get our rotation in there and wear them (SHSU) out in the second half."

Olsson led SLU with four shots and two on goal. Freshmen Jamie Raines and Claire Huston each had three shots and Marinero and Bernadas each had two.

The Lady Lions find themselves in terrific position for the Southland Conference Tournament with just three matches remaining. SLU is tied in sixth place; four points ahead of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The top eight teams make the tournament.

The Lady Lions will take to the road next week to face Northwestern State (8-8-0, 2-6-0) Friday night at 7 p.m. and league-leading Central Arkansas (12-3-1, 7-1-0) Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
