Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

SLU falls to Northwestern State 1-0

Lady Lions Slip to Lady Demons

NATCHITOCHES, La. – Northwestern State's Jayden Wheeler scored in the 48th minute giving NSU the 1-0 win over the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team Friday night.

SLU (6-5-4, 3-3-3 in the Southland Conference) battled hard defensively but couldn't capitalize on the offensive end.

The Lady Lions appeared in good shape at halftime neutralizing the potent Northwestern offense. But just three minutes into the second half, Wheeler scored from inside the box on an assist from Kylee Dominy.

The Lady Demons (9-8-0, 3-6-0) outshot Southeastern 18 to 8. Despite the result, SLU managed to put pressure on NSU getting four shots on goal.

"We just didn't match the energy Northwestern brought tonight," said second year SLU head soccer coach Chris McBride. "They had a lot of energy and purpose about their play. They deserved to win tonight. We need to regroup and turn our focus to Sunday's game."

Sophomore Lexie Gunderson led the Lady Lions with two shots and one on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Nadine Maher had five saves for SLU.

Maher, the Dublin, Ireland native, is tied for most saves in conference matches (56) with Lamar's Sandra Nygard.

Southeastern still sits in good position to make the Southland Conference Tournament Oct. 31 in Beaumont, Texas. The Lady Lions remain in sixth place following seventh place Texas A&M Corpus Christi's 3-1 loss at McNeese Friday night.

SLU will be back in action Sunday at 1 p.m. against conference leading Central Arkansas (13-3-1, 8-1-1).
