CONWAY, Ark. – Central Arkansas scored two goals in the 20
th and 22
nd minute in route to a 3-0 win over the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team Sunday.
Â
SLU (6-6-4, 3-4-3) in the Southland) got two tough breaks leading to UCA goals in the first half.
Â
The Bears (14-3-1, 9-1-0) scored their first goal on a penalty kick by Connie Awuku-Darkoh for her 10
th goal of the season.
Â
Minutes later, the Bears added to their lead on a goal by Camille Bassett that managed to trickle through the SLU defense.
Â
However, SLU didn't quit as they continued to attack offensively. The Lady Lions attempted seven shots and four on goal on in the first half but trailed 2-0 at halftime.
Â
The Lady Lions fought valiantly in the second half but couldn't muster enough offensively. The Bears added a goal by Morgan Hurd in the final minutes to clinch the win.
Â
"After Friday, we wanted to compete in every aspect of the game," said second year SLU soccer head coach Chris McBride. "We did that well today and I was happy with the performance. We gave away a penalty and made an error in the first half that cost us two goals, other than that we were good."
Â
Southeastern's
Sofia Olsson and
Christina Cutura led SLU with three shots and one on goal each. Sophomore goalkeeper
Nadine Maher had eight saves adding to her conference leading 56.
Â
The loss was just the second of the season for the Lady Lions by more than one goal. SLU lost to North Texas 4-0 Aug. 24 on the road.
Â
With the win, the Bears clinched the Southland Conference regular season championship and will be the number one seed in the tournament.
Â
Southeastern will host Nicholls (1-9-0, 3-14-0) Friday night at Strawberry Stadium for Senior Night at 7 p.m.
