HAMMOND, La. – Freshman
Sage Sammeli scored a goal in the 65
th minute on an assist from junior
Amber Marinero to give the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team a thrilling 1-0 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday night at Strawberry Stadium.
The Lady Lions (5-3-2, 2-1-1 in the Southland) fought valiantly the entire night and was on the attack in the first half. SLU broke through when Sammeli snuck in front of the net and smacked it home for the game winner.
"It was just a great ball from Amber down the sideline," said Sammeli. "She gave me a great ball right at my feet and all I had to do was redirect it into the goal and next thing I knew it was in the back of the net."
Southeastern goal keeper
Nadine Maher had seven saves as the sophomore from Dublin, Ireland continued her spectacular play and adding to her season total of 58 saves.
Marinero was terrific getting two shots that were just off the mark and putting constant pressure on the Islanders.
SLU was outshot 10-8 but made the most of their opportunities.
"We knew it was going to be a tough game," said SLU soccer head coach Chris McBride. "After last year's game (0-0 tie) that we would have to be defensively solid and force them into some long shots from 40 yards up."
The Lady Lions will be back in action Sunday at 1 p.m. against Houston Baptist.
"They (Houston Baptist) are one of the top teams in the conference," said McBride. "They beat Abilene Christian and SFA and we know we are going to have to be at our best on Sunday to get past them."
