Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Lady Lions wrap up road trip with tie at UIW

SLU and UIW Battle to 1-1 Tie

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Senior Vanessa Arzaluz scored a goal in the 70th minute for the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team Sunday on the road against Incarnate Word (1-5-1) to secure the tie for the Lady Lions.

SLU (4-3-2) trailed 1-0 after UIW's Gio Olivieri scored in the 34th minute to put the Lady Lions in a hole.

It was a physical match as Southeastern and Incarnate Word were issued two yellow cards each.

Despite being outshot 21-10 and facing 15 shots on goal, the Lady Lions kept fighting and broke through with Arzaluz's second goal of the season.

Junior Amber Marinero, sophomores Lexie Gunderson and Tilly Hallas-Potts and freshman Brogan Bernadas each recorded two shots.

Each team had a chance in overtime to win it. SLU got a corner kick from freshman Claire Huston that was up for grabs near the net before being cleared out by UIW goal keeper Katrina Buck.

UIW nearly won the match in double overtime when Emani Stewart's shot hit the post in the 104th minute.

Stewart led Incarnate Word with five shots and two on goal. Ari Cantu added four shots, all on goal for the Lady Cardinals.

SLU Goalkeeper Nadine Maher was, once again, spectacular. The sophomore from Dublin, Ireland had 11 saves giving her 46 for the season.

"It was a tough game," said SLU soccer head coach Chris McBride. "They (UIW) did a good job of not letting us in behind the way they defended. They've got some good attacking players that created some chances for them. But it's been a long road trip for us and I think it showed in the second half."

The match wraps up a weekend that started with a 650 mile trip to Abilene Christian. SLU, then, made the four hour trip south to UIW and concludes with a 500-mile 7-hour trip back to Hammond Sunday night.

Southeastern will enjoy the friendly confines of Strawberry Stadium next weekend when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday at 7 p.m. Then, the Lady Lions will take on Houston Baptist Sunday at 1 p.m.
