Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Lady Lions Drop First Game of Road Trip

SLU’s Gutsy Effort Falls Just Short at Abilene Christian, 1-0

ABILENE, Texas – Abilene Christian's Ashley Stamps scored in the 83rd minute to give ACU (6-3-0) the 1-0 victory over the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team Friday night on the road.

Despite the pouring rain and driving wind, the match lived up to expectation. The Lady Lions (4-3-1) came in ranked second in the Southland Conference in goals allowed (7) behind Abilene Christian (6) and for much of the match, it was a defensive battle.

SLU (4-3-1) held strong as they nearly overcame the 9 hour-650 mile bus ride and an aggressive attack from ACU's offense. Abilene Christian outshot the Lady Lions 24-14 and 15-5 in the second half and had seven corner kicks to SLU's two.

But Southeastern's defense refused to give in against ACU's potent offense. The Lady Wildcats have three Pre-Season First Team All-Conference selections in senior forward Dylan Owens, junior forward Shay Johnson and sophomore midfielder Christina Arteaga.

The Lady Lions' defense bowed their necks against Arteaga, Johnson and Owens despite facing 24 shots. But Stamps's goal was too much for SLU to overcome.

SLU's Amber Marinero, a junior from West Covina, California, nearly gave the Lady Lions the lead in the first half when her shot hit the post in the 35th minute.

SLU Goalkeeper Nadine Maher turned away several opportunities with seven saves and got help from defenders Sofia Olsson and Tilly-Hallas Potts. All three played the entire match.

Seniors Vanessa Arzaluz and Christina Cutura led SLU with three shots. Freshman Brogan Bernadas and Marinero each had two.

"It was a great team effort," said SLU soccer head coach Chris McBride. "It's tough to play in those conditions because neither team really got to play their style but we're proud of how hard we played on both sides of the field. We just didn't get the result we wanted."

The Lady Lions will have a quick turnaround as they face Incarnate Word Sunday at 11 a.m. in San Antonio, Texas.
