HAMMOND, La. – Sophomore midfielder Miah Zuazua scored an unassisted goal in the 29
th minute of the first half to give Southern Miss a 1-0 win over the Southeastern women's soccer team Sunday night at Strawberry Stadium.
Despite the tough loss, SLU (2-2-1) outshot USM 7-6 (4-1-1) and held their high powered offense in check. The Golden Eagles had scored 18 goals in their previous three matches before being neutralized Sunday by the Lady Lions.
"It's a tough way to lose," said second year SLU women's soccer head coach Chris McBride. "But we played so hard today against a quality opponent. We played physical and did not give in. I think we grew a lot this week as a team not only tonight but Friday (at Lafayette)."
Jessi Cooper, a sophomore forward from Jackson, Mississippi, led the Lady Lions with three shots while senior forward from Pearl River, Louisiana,
Christina Cutura, had two.
It was an extremely physical game from the outset as Southern Miss was whistled for 13 fouls while Southeastern was called for 10.
"Those are the kind of games that we want to play," said McBride. "We were extremely physical with them for the entire 90 minutes and put ourselves in some good spots offensively just unfortunately weren't able to cash in. But we grew a lot as a team this week."
SLU will return to action Friday at ULM at 4 p.m. The Lady Lions lead the all-time series with ULM 13-6-6 including a 1-1 tie at Strawberry Stadium last year.
Live stats and video are available for on the women's soccer schedule page at
