HAMMOND, La. – Freshmen
Brogan Bernadas and
Jamie Raines each scored their third goals of the season Friday as the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team defeated McNeese 2-1 in the Southland Conference opener at Strawberry Stadium.
The match was delayed an hour and 15 minutes due to lightning in the area but that didn't stop SLU from bringing a little thunder of their own.
The Lady Lions (4-2-1) scored when Raines punched it on a beautiful cross from
Megan Gordon in the 10
th minute. SLU lead 1-0 at halftime.
SLU continued to pressure McNeese and capitalized again in the 58
th minute when senior
Christina Cutura found Bernadas, a freshman from Covington, Louisiana, on a free kick in front of the net for the header making it 2-0 Lady Lions.
"It was great effort to win a free kick" said second year SLU soccer head coach Chris McBride. "And then for us to win the second ball while creating chances out wide. We did a lot of good things tonight."
The Southeastern defense was terrific thanks largely in part to sophomore
Nadine Maher who saved nine shots. SLU's aggressive defense has flustered opponents. While they were whistled for 11 fouls, they pressured the Cowgirls into rushed shots.
"It was a really great game," said McBride. "They play a real a good style tactically so it was good to get a win. Both teams played physical and a credit to their girls. It's a great start for us for sure."
SLU returns to action Friday, Sept. 21 at Abilene Christian at 7 p.m. Links for live stats and video are available for Friday night's match on the women's soccer schedule page at
