Volleyball Hosts Tulane for Dig the Lions, Home Opener

Free food, t-shirts for SLU students while supplies last

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana volleyball team hosts Tulane at 6 p.m. Tuesday for Dig the Lions at the University Center.
 
The Lady Lions (1-8) face Tulane (8-3) for the first time in exactly four years, having last faced the Green Wave on Sept. 11, 2014, in New Orleans, Louisiana at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic.
 
Southeastern Athletic Marketing will be distributing free food and Dig the Lions T-shirts to students Tuesday while supplies last.
 
Admission is free and fans are asked to enter the arena upstairs at Gate 3. Volleyball posters and magnet schedules will be available in the Fan Zone.

OPPONENT
  • Lexie Douglas (2.79 k/s) and Makala Heidelberg (2.56 k/s) lead six regular contributors averaging at least a pair of kills per set. Taylor Henigsman (6.39 a/s) and Jenna Ibieta (5.00 a/s) split setting duties for the Green Wave. Kaylie McHugh leads the team with 21 service aces.
  • McHugh (4.38 d/s) and Heidelberg (3.91 d/s) lead the defense along the back line. At the net, Markenzie Benoit (1.58 b/s) and Dayna Kern (1.21 b/s) are Tulane's top blocking threats.
  • The Green Wave's attack percentage stands at .253 through 11 matches, while holding opponents to a .158 percentage.
 
LAST MATCH
Southeastern topped Mississippi State by five points in the first set Saturday, before ultimately dropping the match to the Bulldogs in four, 20-25, 25-19, 25-14, 25-13, in Jag Gym during the final day of action at the Jaguar Invitational.
 
Led by Elyssa Purcell (.556) and Maddy Katchen (.500) in the first set, the Lady Lions (1-8) combined for a .367 attack percentage as a team. Purcell (Alvin, Texas) picked up five of her 11 kills in the initial set. Katchen (Fox River Grove, Illinois), who led Southeastern with 12 kills in the match, joined Jodi Edo (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) in recording three kills during the first set.
 
Katchen (12) and Purcell (11) each recorded double-digit kills to lead Southeastern offensively. Haley Baker (Elkton, Maryland) and Michelle Mirarchi (Plano, Texas) each handed out 14 assists. Mirarchi recorded her first double-double of the season, picking up 11 digs.
 
Alexis Pratt (Houston, Texas) served up a pair of the Lady Lions' three aces. Sophomore middle Tempestt Vaughn (Beaumont, Texas) had a hand in six of the team's eight blocks. Senior libero Lexie Torres (San Antonio, Texas) led Southeastern with 16 digs.
 
UP NEXT
Southeastern returns to the court again in one week, Sept. 18, for a rematch with Southern at 6 p.m. in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The Lady Lions defeated Southern in four sets Aug. 25 at the Troy Invitational in Troy, Alabama. Following the rematch with the Lady Jaguars, Southeastern returns home to open Southland Conference play Sept. 22 against Incarnate Word.

Fans interested in becoming active supporters of the Southeastern volleyball program are encouraged to join the Diggin' It Club. Lady Lion volleyball alums are encouraged to join the exclusive S Club, which is restricted to Southeastern athletic letter winners. S Club members also gain membership in the Diggin' It Club.
