Lady Lions Bounce Back with Shutout Win at Southern

SLU gets second win with shutout of Southern

BATON ROUGE, La. – Sophomore Megan Gordon scored two goals to propel the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team (2-1-0) to a 3-0 bounce back win over the Southern Lady Jags (0-2-2) Monday on the road at Jaguar Park in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The Lady Lions dominated from the outset getting 10 shots, including five on goal, to just one for Southern in the first period.

Gordon, a defensive midfielder from Clophill, England, put SLU on the board in the 20th minute with a free-kick goal just outside the penalty box. The Lady Lions had a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Southeastern continued to apply pressure to the Lady Jags' defense in the second half getting 11 shots and five on goal.

Gordon put the finishing touches on a terrific performance by SLU with a penalty kick goal to make it 2-0 in the 80th minute.

"She (Gordon) was absolutely tremendous," said second year SLU head coach Chris McBride. "Not just tonight but in the North Texas game too. It's just a shame that it was lost in the fact that it went unnoticed because of the caliber of opponent they (UNT) were but Megan was terrific all weekend long."

Payton Colson, a senior from Flowood, Mississippi added the final goal in the 86th minute on a beautiful assist from freshman Caroline Lee on a cross to make it 3-0.

"It was a terrific way to bounce back after the loss (to North Texas)," said McBride. "Southern was athletic and a good challenge for us and we responded nicely being patient on the attack offensively and disciplined."

SLU improved to 11-0 all-time against Southern and have outscored the Lady Jags 60-0.

The Lady Lions will be back in action Friday against the UL-Lafayette Ragin Cajuns at 7 p.m. to cap off a 3-game road trip. SLU leads the all-time series against ULL 7-4-2 but lost a heartbreaker last year 1-0 on a penalty kick goal at Strawberry Stadium.
