LAFAYETTE, La. –The Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team tied UL Lafayette 1-1 narrowly missing a huge win Friday night on the road at the Ragin' Cajuns Track/Soccer Complex.
                                                                                                                         Â
The Lady Lions nearly pulled off the win with just 7 seconds left in overtime when senior
Christina Cutura's shot from 20 yards out hit the cross bar.
Â
Cutura also scored her fourth goal of the season in the 68
th minute on an assist by freshman
Sage Sammeli and SLU got 12 saves by goalkeeper
Nadine Maher. Both appeared to be enough for Southeastern to pick up the win as the Lady Lions led 1-0 with 12 minutes remaining.
Â
However, SLU caught a bad break when UL Lafayette forward Kaylie Powell's cross deflected off a Southeastern defender into the net tying the game at 1-1 in the 78
th minute.
Â
Cutura, a forward from Pearl River, Louisiana, finished with 10 shots giving her 30 for the season. The conference leader in shot attempts narrowly missed cashing in during the first period when her shot hit the left post in the 20
th minute.
Â
"She (Cutura) did a great job and got in great position to make things happen for us," said second year SLU head soccer coach Chris McBride. "But a lot of credit goes to everybody because the entire team played hard and well tonight. We couldn't be more proud of the effort we got from every single player that saw the field."
Â
Maher, a sophomore from Dublin Ireland, made several terrific saves including a diving stop in overtime that saved the match for SLU. The Ragin Cajuns cross was deflected and nearly got past Maher put she dove and saved it inches from the goal line.
Â
"Nadine was remarkable tonight," said McBride. "She did a great job of communicating with our defenders and making sure we stayed in the best position possible when they were on the attack."
Â
The stats were as even as the match as the Ragin Cajuns attempted 22 shots to 20 for the Lady Lions and each team attempted six corner kicks. SLU now leads the all-time series with UL Lafayette 7-4-3.
