HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana junior wide receiver/kickoff returner
Juwan Petit-Frere was named to the HERO Sports FCS Preseason All-America Teams as a return specialist in an announcement on Tuesday.
Petit-Frere was a first team selection. As a sophomore, he was a first team All-America selection by both STATS and Phil Steele, while also earning second team All-Southland Conference accolades.
The electrifying return man made an immediate impact for the Lions in 2017. He led the nation with a 34.6 kickoff return average. The Orlando, Florida native also had two touchdowns and sat atop the FCS national rankings in kickoff return average from the opening week of the season through the end of the year.
In the history of the Southland Conference, only former Lion Xavier Roberson's 2013 kickoff return average of 35.2 ranks higher in the league's kickoff return single-season average rankings than Petit-Frere's tally in his debut season in Hammond.
Petit-Frere was one of seven Southland Conference student-athletes on the preseason All-American teams. Joining him among the league's honorees were Sam Houston State junior wide receiver Nathan Stewart, SHSU senior offensive lineman Mitchell Watanabe, SHSU senior defensive lineman Chris Stewart, SHSU senior wide receiver Davion Davis, Central Arkansas junior defensive lineman Chris Terrell and Nicholls senior kicker Lorran Fonseca.
Petit-Frere and the Lions will open fall camp on Aug. 1 in preparation for the 2018 season, which opens with a 7 p.m. contest at ULM on Thursday, Aug. 30.
