BEAUMONT, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana broke open a tight game with four runs in the seventh inning and then held off a late Lamar rally Friday for a 6-4 win in the series opener at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
The Lions (14-6, 3-1 Southland) cruised to the stretch with a 6-0 lead behind the 2-hit pitching of
Josh Green, but three singles in the seventh produced a run for Lamar (4-14, 0-4 Southland) to break up the shutout.
Three Cardinal runs in the eighth tightened up the game, but
Bryce Tassin worked around a walk and an error in the ninth to earn his third save. Tassin struck out three in a scoreless ninth.
Trenon Trosclair drove in the first run of the game with a second-inning single through the left side, plating
Bryce Steckler from second base.
Southeastern added another run in the fourth.
Drew Avans walked and then stole second base, swiping his team-leading 11th base of the season. He advanced to third when the shortstop committed an error on Steckler's grounder. Lamar starting pitcher Jace Campbell hit the next batter,
Mike Taylor, with a pitch, sealing his fate.
Daniel Wasinger greeted left-handed reliever Grason Wright with a line shot off his ankle for an RBI single.
In the seventh,
Brennan Breaud doubled to right-center field and then later scored on
Cody Grosse's single up the middle. Grosse took second on the throw home and then stole third. After a two-out walk to Avans, Lamar pulled Wright in favor of right-hander Chet Jones.
Steckler greeted Jones with a line-drive single to center, driving in Grosse. Taylor followed up with a two-run double over the head of the left fielder.
Green (3-1) earned the win, working seven innings. He allowed three runs, one earned, on five hits. He did not issue a walk, striking out four.
Grosse (3-for-5), Breaud (2-for-5), Taylor (2-for-4) and Wasinger (2-for-3) led the Lions at the plate.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday. Redshirt junior right-hander
Carlisle Koestler (3-0, 1.13) gets the starting nod versus Cardinal junior left-hander Noah Sills (2-1, 0.74).
