Lions’ Veal Named 1st-Team NABC All-District 23

    HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana junior guard Marlain Veal was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division I All-District 23 first team announced on Tuesday.

    Veal becomes the first Lion selected to a NABC All-District team since Brandon Fortenberry made the first team in 2012-13 and the 12th overall.

    The honor is the latest in 2017-18 for the New Orleans, Louisiana native. Veal was named first-team All-Southland Conference the league's Defensive Player of the Year after helping lead the Lions to a share of the conference regular season title and the top seed in the league tournament. Southeastern advanced to the National Invitation Tournament for the first time and played at Saint Mary's (California) in the first round on Tuesday.

    Veal was selected to the All-Southland Conference Tournament Team after averaging 20.5 points, 6.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds over two games. He was also twice named the league's Player of the Week during the season.

    Veal is currently averaging 13.1 points and 5.3 rebounds. His 202 assists are a school single-season record and are 15th in the nation. He is also second in school history and currently 25th in the nation with 65 steals. He is the school's all-time assist leader with 444 and ranks third in steals (164) and 12th in scoring (1,136 points).

    Joining Veal on the All-District 23 first team were Central Arkansas' Jordan Howard, Nicholls' Roddy Peters, Sam Houston State's Chris Galbreath Jr. and New Orleans' Travin Thibodeaux. Second team selections were Lamar's Colton Weisbrod, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Joseph Kilgore, Arkansas-Pine Bluff's Martaveous McKnight, Grambling's Ivy Smith Jr. and Stephen F. Austin's Shannon Bogues.

    The All-District teams are selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC in NCAA Division I.
