SLU Places 10 on All-Southland Conference Teams

Petit-Frere, Schwebel, Williams, Tatum, Russell, Adeyem-Berglund, Allen, Johnson, Lewis and Miller named among league's best

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana placed 10 student-athletes on the 2018 All-Southland Conference Football teams, which the league office released on Tuesday.

The 10 Lions occupied 12 spots on the All-Southland teams, as junior Juwan Petit-Frere was named first team all-purpose player, first team kick return specialist and second team wide receiver.

Petit-Frere was joined on the first team by junior tight end Bransen Schwebel and junior punt return specialist Devonte Williams. Petit-Frere, senior kicker Jonathan Tatum and senior linebacker Tamarcus Russell.

Honorable mention selections for the Lions included senior running back Darren Johnson, junior offensive lineman Pat Allen, senior defensive lineman Jon Miller, junior defensive end Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund and junior defensive back Xavier Lewis.

Petit-Frere led the Southland Conference with 128.8 all-purpose yards per game. The Orlando, Florida native was kicked away from often on kickoffs in 2018, but the consensus preseason All-American kick returner made the most of his opportunities, ranking 16th in the FCS with a 26.2 kickoff return average.

Petit-Frere made his greatest strides as a receiver. After catching just two passes in his debut season in Hammond, the electric playmaker led SLU with 49 catches for 796 yards and five touchdowns as a junior.

Schwebel, the top pass-catching tight end in the conference, was honored after his most productive season as a Lion. The third-year player out of Amite, Louisiana finished the season with 30 catches for 484 yards and three touchdowns.

Williams rounded out SLU's first team selections, as the Columbia, Maryland native was the top punt returner for a Lion squad that led the Southland with 14.2 yards per punt return. Williams averaged 13.9 yards per punt return in his first season after transferring from Indiana, highlighted by a 49-yard return that set up the go-ahead touchdown in a 62-52 victory over Houston Baptist.

Tatum was named to the second team after an accurate senior campaign. The Alexandria, Louisiana native connected on 14-of-18 field goals and made all 31 of his PAT attempts.

Russell posted one of the most prolific defensive seasons in school history. Russell, who hails from Dadeville, Alabama, ranks ninth in the FCS with 118 tackles – the seventh-highest single-season total in school history. His 11.5 tackles for loss also paced the team.

Russell was joined on the All-Southland teams by defensive teammates Miller, Adeyemi-Berglund and Lewis. Miller capped his Lion career with 31 tackles from the interior defensive line. Hailing from Pelham, New York, Miller forced the fumble that Lewis returned for a touchdown to secure SLU's 62-52 win over HBU.

Adeyemi-Berglund established himself as one of the top pass rushers in the league in his first season as a starter. The Dartmouth, Nova Scotia product led the Lions with six sacks to go with 63 tackles and 10.0 tackles for loss.

Lewis was an immediate impact player for the Lions in his first season after transferring from LSU. The LaPlace, Louisiana native was second on the team with 66 tackles to go with 7.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Johnson was honored after leading the Lions in rushing as a senior. The Long Beach, California native finished with 519 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, while also catching a touchdown pass.

Helping clear the way for Johnson was Allen, who started every game at left tackle in his first season after transferring from Georgia. The Reisertown, Maryland native was consistently Southeastern's top performer up front.

Nicholls quarterback Chase Fourcade was named Southland Conference Player of the Year. Other individual award winners were Incarnate Word's Eric Morris (Coach of the Year), Northwestern State wide receiver Jazz Ferguson (Offensive Player of the Year), McNeese linebacker BJ Blunt (Defensive Player of the Year), UIW quarterback Jon Copeland (Freshman of the Year), Lamar quarterback Jordan Hoy (Co-Newcomer of the Year), Abilene Christian running back Billy McCrary (Co-Newcomer of the Year) and Lamar offensive lineman Garrett Bowery (Offensive Lineman of the Year).
