Lions Use Second Half Surge to Battle Past Stetson
Â
HAMMOND, La. – Marlain Veal had a triple-double and
Moses Greenwood scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team to a 69-57 win over Stetson University Saturday night at the University Center.
Â
Veal, the senior point guard, had 24 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists becoming the first Lion since Mar. 3, 2006 (Ricky Woods at Lamar) to record a triple-double. Greenwood, the senior forward from Sharon, Mississippi, had 10 rebounds for a double-double to add to his career high scoring night.
Â
"Moses is an everyday work horse," said fifth-year SLU head coach
Jay Ladner. "He has never had a bad day since he has been here. Honestly if he was four inches taller he would probably be an NBA prospect. And then Marlain, a triple-double for a 5-8 guard grabbing 10 rebounds and doing what he did was incredible. But he hadn't played particularly well the first few games but he started to show what we knew he was capable of at Texas Tech and then tonight of course."
Â
Along with the heroic efforts of Veal and Greenwood, the Lions defense was terrific forcing the Hatters into 19 turnovers. SLU's defense really picked it up in the second half. Southeastern (2-3) held Stetson (1-3) to just 20 points after halftime and 19-for-48 shooting for the game (39.6 percent).
Â
With the Lions trailing 45-42 with 15:13 left, the SLU defense led the Lions to a critical 20-5 run as Southeastern opened up a 10-point lead 62-52 with 8:10 remaining.
Â
Veal and
Von Julien, the junior transfer from Tulane, were relentless pressuring the basketball led by Veal's three steals and Julien's suffocating ball pressure.
Â
"Those two just harassed their guards all night long," said Ladner. "To the point where they drew several offensive fouls. But right now until we can get our offense together and where it needs to be then we are going to have to win games with defense and I thought we did that in the second half."
Â
SLU also got big plays from seniors
D'Angelo West and
Quinton Thomas. Each hit big three-pointers during the 20-5 run in the second half.
Â
"Sometimes those two guys don't get enough credit," said Ladner. "Both of them played their roles very well tonight. D'Angelo is just steady. He is always going to be in the right spots for us. And Quinton is a terrific on-ball defender right behind Von and Marlain. He really got after it tonight and got a couple of steals and made a big three. Both of those guys really work hard and put a lot of extra time. But more importantly, we are going to be depending on them throughout the rest of the season so it's good to see those guys have some success."
Â
The Lions return to action Tuesday night on the road when they face Mississippi Valley State. SLU defeated MVSU 73-59 last year and lead the all-time series 3-2.
