HAMMOND, La. – After a terrific 2018 season that saw the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team make the Southland Conference Tournament, SLU signed 10 to their 2019 recruiting class under head coach Chris McBride.
Â
McBride and SLU assistant coach
Mary Mancin were hot on the recruiting trail bringing in four forwards including Jessica Hyde (Hattiesburg, Mississippi), Hanna Moffatt (Rancho Cucamonga, California) Avery Royer (Cantonment, Florida) and Eleanor Williams (Frisco, Texas.)
Â
Hyde, the 5-6 Sacred Heart High School Graduate, scored 39 goals and had 20 assists for her career. The Mississippi native was a three-sport athlete in high school playing soccer and running track and cross country.
Â
Moffatt, the Los Osos graduate, also played three sports including soccer, basketball and she was the kicker for the football team. The California native helped guide the soccer team to a 17-7-1 record in route to the quarterfinals.
Â
The Lady Lions (7-7-4, 4-4-3 in the Southland Conference in 2018) also added three defenders including Leana Deeb (Murphy, Texas) Kelli Diaz (San Antonio, Texas) and Kinsley Harmon (Ocean Springs, Mississippi) to add depth to a backline that yielded just 19 goals in 18 matches.
Â
Southeastern also inked two midfielders and a goalkeeper including Victoria Brackmann (Kungsbacka, Sweden), Mya Guillory (St. Amant, Louisiana) and goalkeeper Sophia Wendt (Morona, Wisconsin).
"We've been turning over a lot of rocks to find players this year," said McBride. "Like last year we have players from all over. California, Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida and Sweden. We pride ourselves on finding the best players for our program with different backgrounds to create a diverse team. We feel the character of the student-athletes we have recruited have been a great fit for our program, their soccer ability will make our program even better and we are excited to see the progress we make moving forward."
Â
Head Coach Chris McBride Quotes on Each Signee:
Â
Sophia Wendt
Â
"Sophia is great shot stopper, loves to train and is always wanting to improve her ability. Her growth over the past year is a credit to her work ethic and we are excited to have her on our team."
Â
Leana Deeb
Â
"Leana is a young woman who is very competitive and aggressive. Like many others she can play multiple positions, she will bring a lot to our team. She is very energetic and her competitive spirit will be a great asset to the team"
Â
Kelli Diaz
Â
"Kelli is a very smart defender. She understands her role in the back line well and is great at stepping in and not allowing forwards time on the ball."
Â
Kinsley Harmon
Â
"Kinsley is a very intelligent player. She not only brings a lot of speed and physical attributes to the team but her understanding of roles and responsibilities will have an immediate impact. We've been following Kinsley for a long time and we are excited to have her on our squad."Â Â
Â
Mya Guillory
Â
"Mya's ability to find space in the middle of the field is one of the best in the state. She always finds pockets to receive the ball and find a team mate or have a shot. We feel very fortunate to have local talent like Mya be part of our team."
Â
Victoria Brackmann
Â
"Victoria brings intelligence, athleticism, and great character to the team. She is extremely versatile which gives us the options of playing her in multiple positions. Victoria's confidence on the ball will bring the team an outlet wherever she is on the field."
Â
Avery Royer
Â
"We've been recruiting Avery for a long time and we have seen her play different positions. She excels wherever she plays on the field, as a forward she has the ability to take on defenders 1-on-1 and in the back does a great job defending 1-on-1."
Â
Hanna Moffatt
Â
"Hanna is a very physical and strong player. Her work ethic alone is infectious to her teammates and creates her own chances from nothing. She also has a great understanding of what we want her to play like at Southeastern and she fits in perfectly!"
Â
Jessica Hyde
Â
"Jessica is a player who is very comfortable on the ball especially in wide areas. Her delivery of a cross into the box is the best in the area. We feel she will fit into our system very well."Â
Â
Eleanor Williams
Â
"Eleanor possesses a lot of different characteristics. She can play multiple positions, her movement off the ball to create space is great, she is great with the ball at her feet, and she has the ability to get in behind back lines."
