HAMMOND, La. – The reigning Southland Conference Champion Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team travels to face Nebraska Sunday afternoon at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska at 3 p.m.
                           Â
SLU (1-1) is coming off an impressive performance in the home opener against William Carey winning 78-57. The Lions had six players score in double including seniors
Moses Greenwood and
Marlain Veal who led the way with 12 each. Freshman
Parker Edwards and senior
Quinton Thomas both had 11 and junior
Kajon Brown and freshman
Ty Brewer had 10 each.
Â
"I think sometimes people get too caught up in the winning and losing part of things," said SLU fifth-year head basketball coach
Jay Ladner. "We took a step in the right direction Friday. I thought our defensive improvement was so much better than it was against LSU and of course the difference in the opponents comes into play and we take that into consideration. But we have to understand that this is a process and we made a strides toward understand what our process is Friday."
Â
Sunday will be a tall task for the Lions as they face a Nebraska team that returns four starters from last year's team that went 22-11 and 13-5 in the Big 10 under seventh-year head coach Tim Miles. The Huskers are riding a 12-game home winning streak dating back to Dec. 16, 2017 when they lost to 13
th-ranked and Final Four participant Kansas 73-72 at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
The Huskers return their top four scorers from last year's team led by seniors James Palmer, (17.2 ppg), Issac Copeland, (12.9) and Glenn Watson (10.5) along with junior Isiah Roby (8.7).
Â
"Nebraska is a tremendous basketball team," said Ladner. "And I think it was an absolute crime that they didn't make the NCAA tournament last year. But our focus of course is tomorrow and they are very well coached by Tim Miles with a lot of talent returning."
Â
The Cornhuskers (1-0) won their season opener Tuesday night in dominant fashion over Mississippi Valley State 106-37. Nebraska shot 56 percent from the field (36-for-69) as they jumped out to a 55-13 lead at halftime. Watson Jr. led the Huskers with 19 points. Nana Akenten had 18 and Palmer Jr. had 17.
Â
"A team as athletic as Nebraska, we know that we are going to have to have a superb defensive effort to give us a chance," said Ladner. "I want to see us play with tenacity on both ends of the floor and play smarter and we need to make that the theme tomorrow."
Â
The continuing Cinderella story for the Lions is freshman
Parker Edwards. A native of Mandeville, Louisiana, Edwards leads the team in scoring through the first two games averaging 18 points per game and is shooting an eye-popping 69 percent (9-for-13) from the three-point line. Along with the heroics of Edwards, Greenwood has been as expected. The senior from Sharon, Mississippi has scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds in each of the first two games.
Â
After Sunday's matinee with Nebraska, the Lions will travel to Lubbock, Texas to face the Texas Tech Red Raiders Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
