BEAUMONT, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana will be looking for its best-ever start in Southland Conference play when the Lions conclude a three-game road trip at Lamar Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Montagne Center in Beaumont, Texas.
Southeastern (9-7, 3-0 Southland) has won three straight to open Southland play for the first time since 2004-05. The Lions have never been 4-0 in league play since joining the Southland in 1997-98 with their best start 3-1 in 2003-04, '04-05 and '12-13. Southeastern did start 4-0 on its way to sharing the Trans America Athletic Conference West Division title in 1995-96.
The Lions have also won their first two conference road games for the first time since 2007-08. Southeastern has not been 3-0 on the road in Southland play.
The Lions are coming off a 72-70 win at Abilene Christian on Saturday. Senior forward
Jordan Capps led four Lions in double figures with 16 points and six rebounds. Senior guard
Jabbar Singleton hit four 3-pointers in recording 14 points and five assists. Senior guard
Joshua Filmore added 13 points while junior guard
Marlain Veal had 11 points, six assists and six rebounds. Junior forward
Moses Greenwood pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds while contributing eight points.
Lamar (10-7, 2-2 Southland) lost at home to Central Arkansas, 100-91, in double overtime Saturday despite getting a career-high 38 points from senior forward Colton Weisbrod. Weisbrod added 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. Senior guards Torey Noel and Zjori Bosha each had 11 points. The Cardinals shot 38.8 percent from the field in a game that featured 16 lead changes and 15 ties.

Southeastern is 4-6 on the road and 1-0 at neutral sites in 2017-18. The five wins away from Hammond tie the number from 2016-17 (5-12 road, 0-1 neutral) and are the most since the 2010-11 team won six (5-10 road, 1-2 neutral). The Lions have not won six true road games since the 2007-08 season.
Southeastern is averaging 72.4 points on 44.0 percent shooting overall. The Lions are shooting 35.8 percent on 3-pointers, making 7.7 per game.
Southeastern is allowing 71.8 points per contest on 44.3 percent shooting. Opponents are shooting 33.2 percent from beyond the arc, including 27.5 percent in league play. The Lions have given up an average of 67.0 points, tied for third-best, in three conference games.
Southeastern is averaging 35.8 rebounds and allowing 35.3.
Veal leads the conference in assists per game (5.3). He is fifth in 3-point field goal percentage (.419), 10th in steals (1.8 spg) and assist/turnover ratio (1.5) and tied for 15th in scoring (13.0 ppg). Capps is 19th in the Southland with 12.9 points per game and ranks 11th in field goal percentage (.514).
Greenwood is second in rebounding (9.0 rpg) since the start of league play and sixth overall (6.9 rpg). He is also 14th in field goal percentage (.500) while averaging 8.5 points per game. Filmore is fourth in 3-pointers made (2.3), Singleton sixth in 3-point field goal percentage (.415) and senior forward
James Currington tied for eighth in field goal percentage (.523).
Veal, Capps, Filmore (9.2 ppg, 24 assists), Currington (8.4 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 24 steals) and Singleton (7.1 ppg, 41 assists) are the projected starters for the Lions.
Lamar leads the series 26-21 after sweeping a pair in 2016-17. The Cardinals took a 74-54 win in Beaumont on Jan. 7, then knocked Southeastern out of the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament, 77-65, in Katy, Texas on March 8.
Southeastern is 12-7 at home, 8-16 on the road and 1-3 at neutral sites against Lamar.
Lamar
Lamar returns four starters and seven letterwinners from a squad that went 19-15 overall and tied for fifth in the Southland at 10-8. The Cardinals were picked to finish second in the league in 2017-18.
Lamar is 6-2 at home in 2017-18.
Weisbrod, a first-team preseason all-conference selection, leads the Cardinals with 16.2 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, ranking fifth and second, respectively, in the Southland.
Junior guard Nick Garth is averaging 11.3 points while hitting 2.3 3-pointers a game, fifth-best in the league. Junior forward Josh Nzeakor, who earned Southland Player of the Week honors for week eight, is scoring 11.2 points per game while averaging 7.1 rebounds. He has a team-best 10 blocks. Bosha is second in the conference with 2.3 steals per game (39 overall) while averaging 9.6 points. Senior guard Joey Frenchwood (7.5 ppg) is fifth in assists (4.1 apg, 61 overall) and eighth in assist/turnover ratio (1.7).
Expected to start for Lamar are Weisbrod, Nzeakor, Bosha, Noel (4.9 ppg, 49 assists, 31 steals) and James Harrison (8.4 ppg).
Lamar is shooting 44.1 percent overall, 34.6 on 3s, in averaging 76.9 points per game. The Cardinals rank second in the league in both field goal percentage defense (.423) and 3-point percentage defense (.326) and are the third-stingiest scoring defense in allowing 68.5 points per game.
Lamar is seventh nationally in total steals (162) and 10th in steals per game (9.5), allowing the Cardinals to rank 11th in turnovers forced (17.88).
Lamar is pulling down 38.9 rebounds a game, third-best in the Southland, while giving up 36.9.
Tic Price is in his fourth season as Lamar's head coach.
