SLU Ends Road Swing at ACU

Lady Lions play third straight away from home Saturday at 2 p.m.

1/5/2018 11:47:00 AM

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team will close out its three-game Southland Conference road swing on Saturday, when it travels to Abilene Christian for a 2 p.m. league matinee at Moody Coliseum.

The game between the Lady Lions (1-12, 0-2 Southland) and the host Wildcats (9-4, 3-0 Southland) can be heard live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), online at www.LionSports.net/listenlive and via the TuneIn Radio app. Links to video, audio and stats are accessible on the women's basketball schedule page at LionSports.net.

Southeastern will be looking to snap a seven-game losing streak when it travels to face the league co-leaders and defending Southland regular season co-champions. The Lady Lions could not overcome a two-point second quarter in a 63-47 New Year's Eve loss at Central Arkansas, which shared the league regular season with ACU a season ago.

Senior guard Taylin Underwood led Southeastern with 15 points in Sunday's loss. She was joined in double figures by junior forward Jyar Francis, who chipped in 14 points. Freshman forward Caitlyn Williams added eight points and eight rebounds for SLU, while sophomore guard Tyler Morrison and junior guard Ashailee Brailey shared team-high honors with three assists each.

Southeastern averages 58.0 points per game heading into the game and most of its offense has come from three-point range, as the Lady Lions are second in the Southland to Saturday's opponent ACU with 8.2 three-point field goals per game. The Wildcats are making 10.0 treys per contest.

Underwood is second in the Southland with 18.3 points per game and leads the Southland with 3.4 three-point field goals per contest. She is currently tied for eighth in school history with 1,279 career points and her SLU career record 215 three-point field goals are seventh-highest in conference history.

Francis (10.7 ppg) and Caitlyn Williams (8.2 ppg) are the other top scorers for the Lady Lions, while Morrison is 14th in the Southland with 2.7 assists per game. Brailey joins Underwood among the Southland's top three-point shooters, ranking third in three-point field goal percentage (.404) and 10th in three-point field goals per game (1.6).

Southeastern will need to improve its efforts on the boards if it hopes to turn things around in 2017-18, as the Lady Lions are being out-rebounded by 10.0 rebounds per contest. Caitlyn Williams is the team's top rebounder and ranks sixth in the league with 7.0 rebounds per game.

SLU will also be attempting to better their efforts on the defensive end, as opponents are averaging 76.5 points and committing 18.6 turnovers per outing versus Southeastern. Morrison paces the Lady Lions with 21 steals on the season.

Abilene Christian is the latest obstacle in a difficult stretch to open Southland Conference play for Southeastern, as the Lady Lions' first three league opponents are a combined 8-0 in conference play.

ACU has won its last four games heading into Saturday's matchup, most recently an 80-75 win at McNeese on Wednesday. Sophomore guards Dominique Golightly and Breanna Wright shared team-high honors with 17 points for ACU, while junior guard Sara Williamson added 12 points.

Wednesday's standouts are the top players for the Wildcats. Golightly (13.5 ppg, 8th), Williamson (12.5 ppg, 11th) and Wright (12.1 ppg, 12th) are all among the Southland Conference's top scorers. Golightly also is 8th in the league with 6.9 rebounds per game, while Wright (4.8 apg, 3rd) and Williamson (3.8 apg, 5th) are both among the Southland's top five in assists.

Southeastern is 1-6 all-time versus Abilene Christian and has lost all six meetings to the Wildcats since ACU joined the Southland Conference. The Lady Lions' only win over ACU was in the 1978-79 AIAW Regional Tournament. Last season in Hammond, the Lady Lions fell 82-57 to ACU in Hammond.

The Lady Lions will open its home Southland Conference schedule on Wednesday, hosting Lamar at 7 p.m. in the University Center. Wednesday will be dedicated to breast cancer awareness and all fans are encouraged to wear pink for the annual Geaux Pink game.

Wednesday will also be a Cane's Challenge in the UC. If the Lady Lions score 50 or more points, fans can take their game tickets or student coupons to their local participating Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers by the end of business on Thursday to receive a free combo with the purchase of another of equal or greater value.

SLU junior forward Kyla Williams will be Wednesday's Spotlight Player of the Game, as the first 150 fans will receive a trading card featuring the New Orleans, Louisiana native courtesy of PRIDE.

LionVision subscribers will be able to access a live video stream of Wednesday's game at www.LionSports.net/watch. Links to video and stats will be accessible via the women's basketball schedule page at LionSports.net.
