Lions Out to Bounce Back vs. HBU

    HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana will look to bounce back from its first Southland Conference loss of 2017-18 when the Lions host Houston Baptist Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the University Center.

    Southeastern (10-8, 4-1) had a four-game winning streak snapped with a 71-62 loss to McNeese on Saturday. The Lions shot a season-low 26.2 percent (16-of-61), including 22.7 percent (5-of-22) on 3-pointers. Senior guard Eddy Polanco had a team-high 15 points, tying a career high with 10 free throws. Senior forward Jordan Capps added 14 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Marlain Veal also had seven rebounds to go with nine points, three assists and three steals while junior forward Moses Greenwood had seven boards and eight points. Southeastern out-rebounded the Cowboys, 41-37, including 17-6 on the offensive boards.

    HBU (4-14, 0-5 Southland) will be out for its first Southland win after falling 81-68 at Sam Houston State on Saturday. Freshman guard Oliver Lynch-Daniels led the Huskies with 20 points. Freshman forward David Caraher had a team-high nine rebounds while adding 16 points. Junior guard Braxton Bonds contributed 11 points to go with eight assists and three steals.

    The contest will feature a Greek Challenge, as SLU fraternities and sororities can compete by downloading the LionUp Loyalty app.

    The game will also be a Cane's Challenge. If the Lions score 60 or more points, fans can take their game ticket or student coupons by the end of business on Thursday to their local participating Raising Cane's to receive a free combo with the purchase of another of equal or greater value.

Southeastern
    Southeastern is averaging 71.3 points on 43.1 percent shooting overall, including 34.5 percent on 3-pointers.
 
    Opponents are averaging 71.0 points on 44.1 percent shooting, 34.0 percent on 3s. In conference play, the Lions are holding opponents to 66.0 points, second-best in the league, on 41.3 percent shooting from the field.
 
    Southeastern is averaging 36.4 rebounds and is fourth in league play with 39.2. The Lions are giving up 35.3 boards, but just 34.6 in conference action, tied for third in the league.
 
    Southeastern is committing the fewest fouls in the conference (16.7 per game).
 
    Veal continues to lead the conference in assists per game (5.3) while also ranking ninth in steals (1.8 spg), 11th in assist/turnover ratio (1.4) and 16th in scoring (12.9 ppg). Junior forward Jordan Capps is 11th in blocks (1.1) and 19th in scoring (12.5 ppg). Greenwood is sixth in rebounding (6.8 rpg) while averaging 8.6 points per game. Senior guard Jabbar Singleton is fifth in 3-point field goal percentage (.426) and senior guard Joshua Filmore sixth in 3-pointers made (2.1).
 
    Polanco's 10 free throws against McNeese tied a season-best by a Lion, equaling the number he had against Centenary and of junior guard Marlain Veal's 10 against Stephen F. Austin. His 13 attempts were the most since Davon Hayes had 13 against Maryland Eastern Shore on Nov. 30, 2016.
 
    Veal, Capps, Filmore (8.3 ppg, 28 assists), Singleton (7.3 ppg, 45 assists) and senior forward James Currington (7.9 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 27 steals) have all started the past nine games for the Lions.
 
    The series between Southeastern and HBU is tied at 5 after the teams split a pair of games in 2016-17 with each winning on its own court. The Huskies took an 81-74 win in Houston before the Lions snapped a three-game losing streak in the series with an 83-71 victory in Hammond.
 
    Southeastern is 4-0 at home against HBU.
 
HBU
    HBU is shooting 41.7 percent, 31.5 percent on 3s, in averaging 75.9 points per contest. Opponents are scoring 82.2 points on 46.3 percent shooting, 39.9 on 3-pointers.
 
    HBU leads the country in offensive rebounds (16.17 rpg) and is 27th with a Southland-best 40.22 rebounds per game overall. The Huskies are allowing 36.9 boards per game.
 
    Senior center Josh Ibarra, a second-team Preseason All-Southland selection, was leading the team with 16.0 points and 10 rebounds per game before missing the past eight games with a foot injury.
 
    A pair of freshmen and a sophomore are now the leading scorers for the Huskies. Caraher is ninth in the conference with 14.9 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Freshman guard Ian DuBose is 15th in scoring (13.0 ppg) and eighth in 3-point field goal percentage (.403) while also averaging 5.4 rebounds. And sophomore guard Jalon Gates is tied for seventh in 3-pointers made (2.0 per game) and ninth in free throw percentage (.804) while averaging 10.5 points.
 
    Bonds is third in the Southland in assists (4.0 apg) and fourth in both steals (2.1 spg) and assist/turnover ratio (2.3) while averaging 8.4 points and 4.7 boards.
 
    Caraher, DuBose, Gates, Bonds and junior center Edward Hardt (3.6 ppg, 2.9 rpg) are the expected starters for the Huskies.
 
    Ron Cottrell, the sixth-longest tenured active coach in the nation, is in his 27th season at HBU.

    Southeastern wraps up its current three-game home stand versus Northwestern State Saturday at 5 p.m. The contest follows the Lady Lions' game against NSU at 2 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear their gold for the Gold Out.
