Lady Lions Outlast Alabama State for Tournament Opening Victory

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Southeastern Louisiana held off a late charge by host Alabama State for a five set victory, 25-21, 25-16, 23-25, 20-25, 17-15, Friday in the ISTAP Collegiate Cup Invitational at Lockhart Gymnasium.
 
The Lady Lions (1-6) turned in their best offensive performance of the season thus far, picking up 58 kills on a .129 attack percentage and serving up seven aces.
 
Stepping it up defensively as well, they also held Alabama State (2-6) to .133 attack percentage, the lowest of any Southeastern opponent in 2017. Ten total blocks are also a season best.
 
NOTES
  • Elyssa Purcell, a sophomore from Alvin, Texas, recorded 15 kills to pace the Lady Lion attack. Alli Capps, a freshman from Carthage, Texas, also added a career-high 11 kills.
  • Two players, Michelle Mirarchi and Lexie Torres, turned in double-double efforts. Mirarchi, a freshman from Plano, Texas, dished out 22 assists and picked up 13 digs. Both are career bests. Torres, a junior libero from San Antonio, Texas, led Southeastern with 15 digs and also found time to hand out a career-high 11 assists.
  • Also reaching double digits were Haley Baker and Macey Stock. Baker, a junior setter from Elkton, Maryland, set up her teammates with 18 assists. Stock, a junior defensive specialist from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, recorded 11 digs.

Southeastern plays a pair of matches on Saturday, facing off against Jacksonville (3-4) at 9 a.m. and Western Carolina (1-6) at 3:30 p.m.
